Is there such a thing as a small schooling fish that african chiclids and parrot fish won't eat?

Hoplarchus psittacus is actually the true Parrot cichlid(turqoise/green in color) and not a blood parrot.

i am pretty sure the Parrot Cichlid will eat most smaller schooling fish.

Most smaller African rift lake (malawi/tanganyika/victoria) cichlids in the aquarium trade won't eat fish - they're herbivores. They are very aggressive though and will harass and kill weaker fish. The bigger ones will predate on smaller fish and it is pretty much impossible to stop that.

Some people put dither fish in with them, although they are not really necessary (some people just like some variety). Rainbow fish are often used (they like the alkaline hard water environment and can look after themselves) and giant danios are big and quick enough to stay out of trouble and can adapt to those conditions.

Any fish in particular (beyond the Parrot Cichlid) which you are trying to match with smaller tank mates ?

I actually currently keep a collection of fish that most people tend to think will not work out for the best. Here's a list.

1 Synogonis Catfish
2 Parrot Fish
1 Koi
2 Clown Loaches
1 Malawi Chiclid (not sure of exact name)
1 Black ghost knife
1 Angelicus Botia
1 Electric Yellow chiclid
1 Bumblebee chiclid
2 Albino dojo's
And until recently, 4 neon tetras. I've kept all of these fish in the same aquarium without issue, aside from the neon's being eaten. I like to include a small schooling fish in all of my tanks, which is the reasoning behind wanting something the chiclids tend to not eat.

None of the popular small schooling will really work unless you get rid the synos (depending on the species, some eat fish), parrots (blood or jellybean), koi, malawi cichlids and BGK.

can I ask what size tank you use, before we go telling you to add more fish ?

is this it ? http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1128756#post1128756

no more fish in that tank - you already have issues with compatibility and eventual size. Address these before putting anything else in. If we can help we will; maybe start a new thread :)
