Play sand vs. Pool Fliter sand

I personally used Quickrete medium grit (30 grit) sand. I did play sand in my girlfriend's tank. (all we could find at the time) I can't say that there is a huge difference between the two, aside from the fact that mine required a little less rinsing, and settles easier when my fish kick it up. I love the look of sand. I've got pics of my setup in this thread. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133162 Recent pictures are on page 4.

Theres a ton of different types of sand....play sand from one store may look and feel different from another store brand. I would just get a few "samples" of types and see what looks best....just be sure to avoid sand with silicates.

just be sure to avoid sand with silicates.

That is kind of hard to do seeing how thats what most sand is ;)

BTW most sands are going to vary by location, especially play sand and stuff you get at the home improvement store. PFS is usually more consistant and larger grain size, thats what I went with.

I only use Estes' Marine Sand (does not affect pH, hardness, etc.). It is as cheap as gravel and you don't have to clean it. It comes in a number of colors and is heavy enough to sink quickly if any fish decide to bother (such as my oscar, peacocks, goldfish, etc.).

Pool Sand for me.. too heavy to be sucked up, but fine enough to be sand. Pool sand IMO is wayyy cleaner than play sand. Check out my tank if you want, I used leslie's pool filter sand ($8.99 for 50lb bag) and am very happy with it. I hope you use pool sand!

when you say pool sand, do u mean like DE Filter Powder? or is there actually something called pool sand?

I whent with the play sand I had already bought, and it looks great and the fish love it, below are before and after photos.
