New lighting and algae

For your 55 it would be 25 ml for initial dose, or after every large water change, (5ml for every 10 gallons). Then 5 ml per day, or every other day, (5ml for every 50 gallons) So it would be 25ml + (5ml x 6) = 55ml per week for daily dose, or 25ml + (5ml x 3) = 40ml per week for every other day dose. For a 250 ml bottle, that is 4 1/4 weeks for daily, and 6 1/4 weeks for every other day.

Well that isn't bad. When I read dose every other day, I assumed it was 25 ml every other day. Yikes. I'll try the Excel. Thanks!

I'll grab some some of the other ferts too. I guess I'll need some Iron too.

The cheapest way to do it is to use dry ferts like these from Gregg Watson:

But I must admit, that I am using Flourish Excel, regular Flourish, and Tetra Flora Pride for Potassium and Iron. Everything is doing very well in my tank right now, it has only been going for about 7 weeks, but I have no algae so far. Remember to keep an eye on those nitrates, and keep them between 10 and 20 ppm.

What happens if they aren't?

Nitrates supply Nitrogen to your plants, which is one of the most important foods for them. If it goes to 0, then your plants can suffer. Blue Green algae is also known to strike when nitrates are to low, it happened to me once. I had to use antibiotics to get rid of it.

But the fish are okay?

We're not talking about nitrItes here, but nitrAtes. 20ppm nitrAtes, is not harmful to fish.

Okay, I don't want to murder the plants, but the fish come first of course.

I bought the nitrate and phophate liquid testers on lunch, along with excel. They were out of the iron ferts.
