I have a planted 30 that currently has a school of five zebra danios and a group of five cories. I want a more vibrant fish, but not a gourami or betta. I was wondering if I could do a single firemouth or maybe a few shellies. I don't want the cories to get picked on, that is my main concern. Are male FM's terribly nasty when they are kept be themselves? Do they need to be with others? I do not want more than one Firemouth, so if they need to be with others then it is out of the question; same goes if it would grow too large for a 30g. Do they get 6" or 4"? My pet store states 4", but online I saw 6". I trust the forums here over any of the online/LFS sources.
Any advice?

mine is 4 inches. she is pretty moody, lays eggs when the tank gets 50% water changes, ( no male ) she likes to pick on the angel, and the angel her. but usually there happy together. not sure about smaller fish with her though, I tried putting her in the tank with other fire mouths and sevrums, they did not like her so back she went 1 hour later.

typically Thorichthys meeki(Firemouth) hit about 4+ " in aquariums.
they are considered mildly aggressive(meaning they can hold their own nd can be placed with other mildly aggressive cichlids)
it will most likely be the ruler of the 30 community. Personally it being a cichlid
it may vary a bit from fish to fish and it can at times express those typical cichlid traits. but they are considered safe for a community tank.

Thanks guys, I think today I will go get one and see how it does! :headbang2:

IMO better candidate for the tank than a firemouth would be Laetacara curviceps or port cichlids if you can find some.

Did you ever get that firemouth?
I was thinking of getting one for my tank and I was just wondering how it worked out for you (so far).

I have a single male firemouth about 4 - 41/2 ", he's in a mixed 175g tank with other "mild mannered" cichlids and community fish. He's the boss except for my 2 large gold severums ( they never fight or interact). Except for being a little territorial I have never seen him aggressive. I think he's one of the nicest looking cichlids out there and would definitely give it a try.

I have a 29 with a JD and a 29 with a FM, BN plecos on the bottom and tetras at the top. Works for me.
