Why submerged heaters are the best

My friend had a what looks like a 44 gallon community tank. Did a WC and forgot to unplug the heater. The next morning he found his fish dead, some gasping for air. Thinking it was the water quality, he was about to do another WC when he found the water felt warm and gave a tingling sensation. Realized the heater was cracked and was zapping his fish all night long. Sadly there were no survivors. =(

same thing can happen with submerged heaters
:iagree: Depends where the submerged heater is positioned. If the heater was horizontal and close to the bottom of the tank then maybe, but it's not very often that people place it there.

It also depends if the heater is in the tank. Mine will be in a sump soon so in that case, yes a submersible heater would be safer :)

I keep my filters and heaters on a power strip apart from the lights. One flip of the switch and I'm good to go.

I also keep the filter and heater on a seperate power strip so I know I will never forget to unplug it. My fear is that the heater becomes "stuck" on, so I bought 2 Rena Smartheaters that have a large flashing light if the temp goes + or -5 of the set temp, and told everyone in the house that if they see a flashing red light in the tank to let me know. Best I can do.

Most of my tanks don't have heaters...I just heat the room :D

ditto^ my 55g has a ol' heater in it I always check the water lol.

But my other tanks are heated by my "free" heat. (gotta love apt's)
but this summer when the "free" ac is on I'll have to get heaters.
