I put several pieces of mopani in my brackish tank like 6 months ago.. it gets some sort of mold/fungus growing on it.. like globs of snot.. it builds up pretty good each week and i scrape it off before doing the water change..

Everyone told me that this will go away but it still has not after 6 months.. what is the deal? it makes the tank looks so gross..

Also, any sand that touches the underside of the wood turns very dark.. almost black..

any suggestions would be much appreciated..

Did you soak the wood before adding it to the tank? It may be because the tannins are still leaching out or because of bacteria harboring in the wood. I usually let my wood soak [a day or two] in a bucket full of water with some salt and vinigar added, and a small powerhead to keep the water circulating. After the wood has been soaked I boil it in clean water.

I have found it best to bol Mopani before placing it in the tank.

I boiled my mopani, and thats why it did mold. it was fine soaking for 2 weeks in a tub,, the minute I boiled it bam it started that. mine is also that way, but I am leaving it, I hear its suposed to go away, if not I will get a new piece of different wood.

uh...I have never had a piece of boiled Mopani do what I am hearing described, but have had on unboiled Mopani....

really, well seems Mopani is good for this then. I just read some site where if you boil it it does this, and I did not read it until after I boiled mine LOL!

I boil mine and dont have a problem.

Often there is stuff growing on it, funguses, even plants (i had both on one piece).

Ever since I have started boiling I have had no trouble. Well apart from finding a pot big enough.

i didn't boil it but i did soak it in a bucket for prob about 6 weeks.. i just drained the water out and replaced it with hot fresh water every couple days for about 6 weeks. there was no mold or anything - not till i put it in the tank.

I do have ghost shrimp.. i don't know if they munch on it or not but there certainly is still a ton of the crap there on a regular basis. it is pretty irritating. the tank gets so gross so fast..

try taking it out boiling it in a slightly salted water and then letting it fully dry, then give it a shot in the tank and see how it goes.
