i was just wondering how you guys felt about buying live rock on ebay? there are a couple of sellers (customliveroskcs and wholesaleaquaticsupplies) that have some for sale on there for 3.75/lb. i know this price is good, but has anyone every purchased live rock on ebay? any comments/experiences?

i bought LR off ebay and was very happy with it. i don't think the seller is still active but i think you can still get the rock from a different seller. i think it was something like $2.25 or something a pound for fiji (this was last year). the rock was great, only dissadvantage was i couldn't pick out the pieces myself. if your lfs sell rock for $6+ a pound i highly recommend ebay or you can try seeing if someone at your local reef club is breaking down a tank and is selling their rock.

it was cured and no it didn't have much in the way of critters on it. there was evidence of the animals that once lived there (empty FD tubes, coral skeletons) but not really any life. not long after being in the tank the microscopic life boomed. i did get other LR tho from the lfs so i can't really say where the pods, micro brittle stars and bristle worms came from... as far as coraline goes the rock was pretty much all scrubbed as cured rock usually is... if you want really live full of critters rock you want uncured but then you have to cure it out of your DT.

one more question....if i were to buy several pounds of live rock (like 40 or so) on ebay, could i add that all to the tank when i get it? i don't have another tank to put it in or anything, so i've just been buying a pound or two here and there and adding to the tank, but i'd really like to just get it all at once if i could. i have stuff in the tank (fish, inverts, etc), so i don't want to do anything that would harm them...

I bought some LR from wholesaleaquaticsupplies and it was horrible!

I ordered it on Feb. 23 and got it on March 20...I wasn't as impressed with it was I was with liveaquaria.com...their LR was great and had good colors and lots of critters on it.

really, batman. i was looking at the LR from liveaquaria.com, and it looked pretty good. what in the way of critters did it have?? feather dusters, macroalgae, corals???

I actually got feather dusters and LOTS of plant growth on the rock. I was very happy with the size of the pieces too. Large, great shapes, and with lots of holes. Also, the liveaquaria LR that I got had some red and pink coraline algae and not just purple. How much LR are you wanting to get? If your getting the 45lbs from liveaquaria or anyother LR from them they ship 2 day air so the rock gets to you way faster then the ebay seller. I live one state away from the ebay seller and they got it to me in 3 days.

It's up to you. A lot of people really like the rock they get from the ebay seller and some don't. I hope that whatever you choose it comes out great.
