Petco...just sad

I agree with the previous post, if one petsmart or petco has done me wrong they all have. And in my experience, i agree that these stores do not hire the most intelligent or concerned employees...

Once again, you spout very ignorant words. My wife works part time at PetSmart, so you believe she is not intelligent or concerned about the animals that she cares for in the store?

The fish get very good care when they are in the store, and are even treated when they are ill....same for all other animals. This location refused to sell birds because of an illness...for several months, refusing many customers. Does that tell you that they are more concerned about money or the animal's wellbeing?

All dogs and cats get personal time, the dogs get to run around the store and play when the store is closed. They all get the most expensive and the best food, not the cheap crap...same for the fish...they even feed veggies to the ones that require a vegetable diet...not all LFS do that.

Hell, they even do background checks before releasing pets for adoption...and make them go through training classes.

Also, you don't know how many times a week they refuse to sell fish to people that have no idea what they are doing...despite repeated attempts to point them in the right direction.

Meh, I'm done defending these store...most of you have your opinions. I just wish people would base their opinions on fact instead of that one time that one guy did that one thing that you didn't like. If you actually took the time to find a good store (most are good) you could easily find great stock at a great price.

I'd love to if I were near your area. Perhaps when I move to Canada in a few years. No knowing for sure yet if I will.

And debates are endless when it comes to petstores and management, folks. Regardless, all your opinions still matter but we can do nothing about the situation where conditions are deplorable other than to report them to the proper authorities so they can be immediately corrected.

As of late, all three of the chains we have here, Pecto, Petland, and Petsmart, seem to have all taken turns for the worse. The Petland tanks are dirty, and have BBA and BGA in them, badly. Petsmart has BGA in their tanks. There are always dead fish in them also, and they recently quit selling real plants, and went to the non aquatic plants in a tube, like Petco. Petco is usually better, but the last time I was in there, they had two tanks full of fish with Ich, and some kind of blistery lesions, that were so bad, I would have bought them just to euthanise them if I would have had the money. I know that there are people in all of these businesses that love the animals, but they are understaffed and accompanied by other people who really don't care. It is sad that these companies that rake in so much money off of these animals, don't have a system in place that keeps them healthy and safe, for those who want them.

I was actually really surprised yesterday, because I was buying driftwood at Petco and my sisters boyfriend said something like "You could just go to the beach and get it for free". Then the worker told him of the risks of doing that, so I thought it was cool. When a new petco opened by me I was in the fish section once and the workers were talking about all the idiot customers and how it's sad they can't refuse sales of fish.

This is true. I asked a girl at Petsmart if she could refuse to sell fish to someone. She emphatically said yes, and she does it all the time. On the other hand, I was told by a Petco manager that they cannot refuse sales of fish to a customer. I was in Petco and saw a mother buying a "nemo" for her little brat (was a brat). The employee told he the fish needed salt water, mommy said "I have lots of salt at home". Classic. I tried to step in and she told me that if it dies, she'll buy another. No tank at home, it was in her cart. A freshwater 10 gallon startup package. Poor fish. It happens all the time at Petco that I have decided to not go in, as much as I am tempted.:silly:

there is a Petco, and Petsmart localy here.

Both stores tanks are VERY well maintianed, and I have seen only a few deaths in their tanks. I've bought fish from both stores and have had no problems.
I think part of it is that the people that work in the fish departments are fanatical fisheads anyway, the lady at petsmart told me she has 13 tanks at home!

Anyway, they are not all bad news..

Now that is just plain ridiculious! Some people are just too bull headed and think they know everything when it is clear that they do not have a clue. A freshwater tank set up for a saltwater fish? Now that just makes me mad! The employee should of told her that she is wrong but then again maybe they did and she just doesn't want to listen. She is intent on going home and setting up the fresh water tank for a saltwater fish without even any regard to even stabalize the temp.in the tank let alone all of the other things needed to do before adding fish. Like addig marine salt to the tank if it is a saltwater set up.

Maybe it depends on the store or the manager. When I heard the workers talking they were talking about how people come in to buy all the finding nemo animals for their tanks and it's really depressing. One man tried to tell them that Saltwater fish can live in freshwater if the conditions are really clean, wtf?:wall:

We all have to keep in mind also that with those chain stores the decisions are made on the corporate level and sometimes employees' hands are tied and they have to follow the "script" given to them.
I remember being in a local petco and noticed that one tank had fish that should have never been kept together (cant realy remember exactly what they were) and I pointed that out to the girl but she said thats what the corporate office wants and thats how it has to be.

I also see that those stores are understaffed and way too many times they have people from other departments covering fish and the only thing they can do is catch the fish and write down the SKU#.
