I think you lose minimal bacteria on a water change and/or a gravel vac. Though the vac may disturb or break up wastes that can release ammonia.

Its funny this product was supposed to be discontinued, but Marineland just released Bio-spira in new yellow bottles and the same refrigeration requirements, weird...

Bio-Spira was discontinued. Check the Marineland website, they pulled all information about it is because they no longer sell it. They repackaged it as Tetra Safe Start. The information about that product can be found here:
