So I have been noticing the ehiems and they are definately the way to go and will be my main filter for my new high tech planted tank.

The ehiem comes in differnt models and I was wondering which ones are the most efficient, least expensive, etc. I have a few choices and the choices are based on the cost. As we all know setting up a high tech planted tank is not cheap and from past experiences i know filters are very important, you don't want to regret.

Here are my choices

1. Eheim 2260 ($260) + Filstar XP3 ($160) - Total $420
2. Eheim 2260 ($260) + Eheim 2217 ($199) - Total $460
3. Eheim 2217 ($199) + Eheim 2217 ($199) - Total $400
4. Eheim 2028 ($300) + Filstar XP3 ($160) - Total $460
5. Eheim 2028 ($300) + Eheim 2217 ($199) - Total $500
6. Filstar XP3 ($160) + Filstar XP3 ($160) + Filstar XP3($160) - Total $480

I have came to the conclusion that 2 filters are better than one, and ehiems are better then the rest :silly:. Oh and how does the 2028 compare to the 2217s?

If you know any websites that sells these filters brand new for cheaper, feel free to tell me, I live in Canada and I hope the website is reliable and accepts paypal, for identity theft reasons :headshake2:

Thanks for your input.

Well, you did ask....

I think those two are very similar...overpriced and more difficult than they need to be.

Of your choices listed, I would go with the #6.

If it was my tank, I wouldn't use any of the above.

Personally, I'd strongly consider option 3. Eheim Classics are still the best filters Eheim has put out.

Check for online sales at the Drs & BigAls, and look at the flow & internal volume specs for 2217s at the Eheim site. I suspect you'll find that you get the most bang for your buck w/ a pair of 2217s.

I would choose option #3. The 2217 is rated for a 159 Gallon tank with a pump output of 264 GPH but when filled with recommended media the output is closer to 112 GPH. The 2028 looks nicer and the specs. are similar but for the money, I'd choose the 2217. Both filters usually come preloaded with media.

I purchased mine at BigAl's though DrsFosterSmith has them on sale til 9/2 for $150. Just know that the canisters are opaque green in color and not clear like the catalog shows.

I have a pair of Eheim 2026. I love them. One doubles as my pressurized co2 "reactor". I push the gas directly into the intake. I have run it this way for going on 6 years and it still runs perfectly and very quietly. However, I would not use the models with the built in heaters. I went with Hydor inline heaters.

I have not owned other Eheim models- but I am aware of a number of folks who have had Eheims running for as long as 20 years.

BigAls sells Eheims with media as a package deal. The 2026 is $230 w/ the media and the 2028 is $250.

I do not agree with bored re outgassing. I see little point to be pumping co2 in on the one hand and then outgassing it on the other- even if the outgassing effect is not major. Not only does it waste money by using up the gas faster, but it means the co2 levels will be less accurately controllable.

One of the important considerations with any piece of equipment is how durable it is and long it runs reliably. The Marinelands have not been around long enough to know if they will last for many years although I have heard good reports about their initial quality.

Personally, I would never own a Fluval. I have heard good things about Renas. Basically if you cant afford the Eheims, then Rena would likely be a good 2nd choice.

I am fully aware that the prices may be too high, considering all the prices are from BigAls Canada online, I was kind hoping i get some links to sites with better prices too. :dance2:

rbi, what do you suggest?

btw the classics and the pro 2 both come with media for the price that i gave.

As long as the total price is below $500 i am fine with it. I am looking for the most efficiency for that money.

Fluval from my past experience are absolutly trash.

Oh and how do you guys feel about the large eheim canisters? 2260?
