fish i.d.-took on a horror tank

eeeesh, I hate people who do this to fish, I was at my LFS waiting for the bettas to be unpacked, stupid woman had a common pleco in a freaking 10g, and one who worked there had an albino chocolate that was 5-6" in a 10g as well, I'ts like, are you stupid or something?

We should have a section entitled rants and horror stories so we have a place to dump. Sometimes I too want to say "What and idiot you are!" and then I realize that not everyone takes the hobby as serious as we do.

Think I mis-placed my halo this morning.:grinyes:
 
have to say the chinese algae eaters were eating one of the rainbow sharks this morning, it was nearly dead,just the odd twitch and jump as they were scrapping his sides, not sure if they killed him or if it was the move in 1 inch of water still in the tank full of decor,for a 45 min drive,either way since i took out the unlucky shark,they have been terrorising the other albino rainbow, i have fed them and they just arent interested,all they want is fish for breakfast!!! ive tried flake, algea tablets and catfish pellets,but they just dont want to know,only another hour til the lfs open,then they can deal with the delightful cae's!

they are also known as golden algae eaters. If they are small and picking on the goldies, they are severely underfed. These guys usually get more aggressive as they mature. I don't have any experience with them actually attacking other fish for their slime coat because their feeding was always up to par. I would assume if they are well fed, they won't be looking for the slime coats.

fish will eat dead fish so its hard to say if it killed it vs dead and eating it.
 
CAE's are well known for feasting on other fish, especially as they grow bigger. FYI, they don't stop growing when they reach 3-4 inches. They will grow to a foot long and will get more aggressive as they grow.

I know someone who had a 950L (250USgal) with a pair of breeding oscars and a couple other cichlids. Both oscars were over a foot long. He got 3 CAE's as a gift and put them in there. They were about 5-6 inches long and in no time they had harassed his poor oscars to death. They just kept latching on and scraping the slime coat off, but the trouble was that when the oscars turned on them, they were too fast. They are VERY fast swimmers.
 
My LFS clerk told me they got some CAE sucking catfish in to try them and they killed several fish in the store. And these were babies! I really don't understand what they are doing in the trade at all. Everything I've heard about them indicates that they are a disaster fish from the git go.
 
:) well all the tropical fish from the horror tank are now gone, the lfs took them on no problems. so i thought i would post some pics of the 2 goldies in there, now looking much much happier without the heater holding the tank at 80* and without the little terrors, sorry i mean cae's, chewing on them. they seem so much calmer, and gently swim around the tank digging around in the gravel for any left over pellets. they are beautiful-well i think so :perv:

We had a similar experience with a CAE. We gave it away to someone with piranhas :). They can have it!
Sorry - but will NEVER make the mistake of getting one of those things again. We lost so many fish to it, before we figured out what was happening. (Like around 12!!) And like you found out, it didn't matter WHAT we tried to feed it, to make it leave the fish alone. Before it got given away, it got a designated QT tank by it's lonesome. Couldn't hurt no one that way!

Btw, your goldies look very happy now.
