no way a 20gal is way too small for an 8in cichlid i would recommend at a bare minimum you put it in a 55gal with bigger being better

Its a tiger Oscar. I've had it in there for 3 years, but I can't just fit a 50 gal. in my room.

three years? that fish should be at least a foot long. you're not doing it any favors by keeping it in such a small tank - it is already stunted, which causes long-term health problems including a shortened lifespan. if you can't fit a properly sized tank, you should find a new home for the fish.
