Hello all,

I am finally setting up my tank tomorrow (gravel, decorations, water), ect.. The only thing I have not purchased yet are the light bulbs. It is set up for 4 VHO bulbs in the canopy each 4 foot long. I can buy the lights locally so I plan on picking them up tomorrow as well. The fish tank is a 150G 5' x 2' x 2'.

I would like to buy some easy care plants after the cycle has been completed (it seems like I remember reading to wait until the cylce is complete before adding plants?), and I would like to know what combination of VHO types you all recommend (i'm guessing they are around 120 - 140 watts each)? I don't plan on having co2 hooked up to the tank and like I said, I would just like to go with easy care plants at least for awhile to help with nitrate and to make the fish feel a bit more comfortable. If I really like the whole plant thing and I get into it then I will add co2 at a later time.

Thanks for all that chime in. :)

are these T12 VHO? icecap ballast?
with t-12 VHO 48" are 110 watts per bulb.

the problem is finding VHO in the right spectrum these (I beleive) were developed and pushed for marine tanks prior to MH lights.
there is one bulb I have found that seems to work for plants. Triphosphor. most of the others appear to be actinics.

Yep they are T12 with icecap ballists.

Not to sound stupid but will HO fit into a normal VHO endcap? What are the watts on the HO and are there different spectrums to choose from, or will just a normal HO work for planted tanks? Will 4 HO's be enough for my tank?

Hopefully I can get something to work on plants with my ballasts and end caps as I can't afford to go out and buy different ballasts/end caps. If not I guess I will just go plantless but I was hoping I could give them a try.

Thanks for the responses.
