Ace25's 75G Build Thread

Ace, I'm trying to figure out something. If I read the "New Tank" cycle time, how did you come this far so fast? Seems to me you've done in 45+ days what should take around 6 months.

Years of experience, knowing exactly what to test for and add back to the water, big water changes, plus using water / 120lbs of 6yr cured live rock / 5 year old sump+refugium off of my old 29G that I upgraded from.

The first 30 days I did have a mini cycle and tested water quality daily, but since I used well cured rock that had all the right bacteria and a well established refugium with lots of pods, it didn't take long to make my new sandbed mature. A lot of my fish I have had for years and they all moved over to the new tank at the same time as the rock. Pretty much the only new thing in the bigger tank was the sand and 1/2 of the water. On a new tank with unknown cured rock you want to give it time to establish, but since I knew everything going into the tank was well established already it makes setting up a tank go a little quicker.

I guess that would help to be able to up-size. Oh well, I'll just take my time. Maybe next year I'll have a nice tank too.

Ace, I do think that since I switched to the 90 Gal tank I'll go with the Deep Sand Bed and then just add live rock and see how that works out.

Here are a couple pics of my Randall's Goby that I picked up last week with the tiger goby. Top fin is a little beat up but hopefully it will all grow back. It finally decided to venture out in the open today. I have so many fish that live in the rocks that I never see, I gotta have 5 or 6 that I know are in there because I see flashes of them every month or so but can never get a picture.

What do you have in there that keeps your rocks clean? Since my kole tang died I have nobody to keep my rocks tidy...lost 7 fish to brook recently...can I get some snails without worrying about them dying?

Brooklynella won't affect the snails. As long as the snails are acclimated carefully and slowly (I like to get mine in a shipment before the LFS can put them in), they should do ok. Of course, the presence of food is a must, as well :D.

Ace, I think I've read every page of this thread, can you tell me who made your tank and what size PVC you used? Your set up is just awesome!!

I forgot the name of the place that built the tank for me. I know it starts with an L and is out of Los Angeles.. I want to say Lemos but I know that isn't correct. I don't know why but I always forget the name of the company. I had just asked my LFS for a custom tank and they picked the MFG they like.

PVC, it is 1-1/2" PVC for the drain, and 3/4" pvc for the returns and closed loop.
