20T stocking suggestions

Whoops, I thought you originally had 5 neons. I meant to say 10 Neons, 5 Pandas and a Pearl Gourami or a German Blue Ram as a final stock.

IMO A 20 tall is not enough for a ram or a pearl gourami. Remember that the footprint is the exact same as a 10 gallon...

The foot print is 24" x 16.25". So I'm still open to any suggestions. Especially if a ram or pearl gourami is too big. I guess I can still increase the neon population but I'd really like the kids to see a centerpiece.

Really? That's not the standard footprint for a 20H...

anyways, a single dwarf gourami or a honey gourami pair would look nice as a centerpiece.

Its one of those Tetratech kits. I got it from a neighbor down the street in a moving sale.

Thanks. I'll look into those you mentioned.

umm just to clear things up with the footprint and stuff:
10 gallon footprint 10"x20"
20 gallon high footprint 12"x24"
20 gallon long footprint 12"x30"

and one pearl gourami OR a pair of german blue/gold rams would fine with 10 neon tetras and 4 panda corys

I really like the look of the rams. If I can truly house one of them (2 isn't too much?), I think I found my centerpiece. BTW, we have 5 pandas. I guess I can up the neons to 10 as well. Wouldn't that be a little overstocked? Or are the rams smaller than I think?

Thanks for everyone's input.

You can easily figure out if you're overstocking by using the 1" per gallon rule. Basically you multiply the length X width X height of each fish and add it up.

For example if you had 10 neon tetras :

2" x .25" x .5" = .25 gallons per fish x 10 = 2.5 gallons for 10 neon tetras. (the 1" rule is very generous for smaller fish :grinno:)

Keep in mind that this does not mean you can cram 10 neon tetras in a 2.5 gallon tank, just that that is how much space they require in a community tank. (eg. 20 gallon tank)

So that leaves you with 17.5 gallons worth of tank space to continue stocking.

Now you want to add 2 german blue ram cichlids (guesstimating size as I don't own any) :

3" x 1" x 2" = 6 gallons per fish x 2 = 12 gallons for 2 German Blue Ram Cichlids.

You now have 5.5 gallons left.

With your 5 Panda Cory Cats added in (again, guesstimating as all my cory cats are 3/4" juvies) :

2.5 x 1 x .75 = 1.875 gallons per fish = 9.375 gallons for 5 Panda Cories.

23.875 Gallons worth of fish in a 20 gallon tank. You could either get only one blue ram, thus putting you below the 1" fish per gallon rule, or you can slightly overstock as long as your filtration is excellent and you do weekly water changes.
