DIY Internal Canister Filter!!!

I did my little DIY out of necessity. My 7 year old came home with a cray and I had no tank set up for it. I took an extra 10 gal that was empty. Pulled a couple of the pot scrubbers out of one of my established filters and made do. I live about 30 minutes from the nearest Walmart and at least an hour from the nearest LFS, so going out and buying a filter just wasn't possible at the time. I found that it works quite well. Now I know that if I need a QT or a hospital tank all I have to do is grab a cup stuff it with established pot scrubbers and I have an instant cycled tank. I don't have to leave one up.

People! This Thread has gone waaaaaaaaaaay off topic! This is meant to be about ways of finding junk around the house/in the trash/beside the road and DOING IT YOURSELF! For the love of God, lighten up a little, folks. Fair enough, this filter ain't the prettiest thing to make it's way into an aquarium, fair enough, most of us might never try it ourselves... But if push came to shove and you were in a bind where your flash Eheim gave up the ghost, how many wouldn't think back and go "Oh, yeah, there was that cool internal made by that dude on that random Forum years back! Maybe I'll give that a go..." ?

Fair dinkum, we all know DIY does not always mean "cheaper than a bought one". In fact DIY is quite often way more expensive, time consuming and labourious, but that's what makes it fun!! And for someone to get on their soapbox and claim this thing is worth over a hundred bucks, because of irrelevant incidentals like tyre wear or gas or whatever else is is totally missing the forest for the trees...

Chill out people. Give the guy a pat on the back for trying something new and stop being such a bunch of nit-picking nanna's. Rant over.

well thank you very much!!! :thm::)

Cost aside I think it's a great idea!! Most of the stuff needed to make it is already available around most homes. :)

You make a great point here, one that will stick in my mind but I think you meant fluval not Eheim! lol

And besides - where do new inventions come from? From someone looking for a better/cheaper/more efficient alternative to what is commercially available.
I came up with an inexpensive alternative oboe reed case for my oboe students. I have been selling them for about 8 years now. Not a big market, as you might imagine, but it's extra money for me, and I enjoy the fact that 1) I thought of it and 2) It works, and 3) It is a lot cheaper than what else is available.

Not rain on anybody's parade. But the cost list above is incomplete. It doesnt include the cost of gas to run around to all the stores to get the stuff, nor the wear and tear cost on the car, It also doesn't include the value of the time involved. You can earn 8-10 bucks an hour flipping burgers. So if you spent 5 hours on the project- including getting everything, then there is another 40-50 bucks of cost.

Don't forget to include the cost of rent in keeping your tank warm and safe from the elements. Who would have thought fish could be so expensive?
