Hi guys,

I have found a fellow freshwater community tank owner who is willing to give me their used mature filter floss to aid with my cycle but im not sure what I need to do with it?

I am currently 1 week into doing a fishless cycle using fish food on a 64G planted tank..

How will this floss help me and what is the best way to use it? How will it change my cycling process?

Many Thanks

Just put it in your canister or whatever filter you're using. It will basically just expedite the cycling process and begin to provide the "good bacteria" you need long term.

Im using a rio 240 built in filter which has layered media.. From the bottom up I have 3 blue bio sponges (1 fine,2 course), 1 green nitrate sponge, 1 thin white cotton like media... Where would be the best place to put the new media?

What affects am I likely to see when this is introduced? Does this make a huge difference to the cycle?

Cheers

Doesn't really matter, but I'd probably put it nearest your biological media which in this case would be between the bio sponges. You shouldn't see a difference in the cycling process, but it will likely just happen a lot faster than it normally would if you didn't have something like this in there from an existing tank. For example, if you haven't started to see your ammonia levels raise after one week into the cycle, you should soon with the "dirty" media in there.

Cool! thanks Dave

You can also put it in a media bag or a pantyhose (cut to fit) and hang near the intake so it will help to seed your filter faster.

just a thought- i would put the biological media after the mechanical media. it will keep the biological media cleaner and it wont clog as fast.

So do you mean to have my media upside down to the way i have it now? Bio at the top nitrate and white media at the bottom?

nitrate?
