230 Tank Build

drill a small hole.. (mine is about 1/8 or so in diameter, I should make it a little bigger though... sometimes it gets clogged with salt) . That'll let some air thru which won't create a suction.

Glad to hear everything's finally moving along!

I actually had already drilled a 1/4" hole in the top of the entire piece, which is not viewable due to my poor camera angle. :hypnotized: Sorry.

I tried varying the small valve I had inserted via air tube into the hole. Apparently, even when fully open the valve was not allowing for enough air entry. In the interest of experimentation, I removed the valve leaving the 1/4" hole completely open. The flushing stopped immediately. The water level now varies, at times, within the elbow portion of the standpipe, but has yet to rise to a level which creates a vacuum (flush).

Now for a follow-up question, what is the ideal distance from the top of the overflow wall to the water level within the overflow section itself? In other words, is there an ideal waterfall distance?

Cheers, Keith

P.S. you tube video to follow soon. :)

Not that I know of.

It all changes due to the rest of the system. Like what's happening down at the sump and flow rates, etc.

If it is cyclically raising and lowering then you have a siphon running instead of an 'overflow'. This would mean more air is needed. Sounds like you have a lot of flow.

Oh, congrats on the leaks!

Wow. Nice playground you got there. Wood stands don't leave a lot of access do they?

It's always weird to see aquarium videos with no speech as the camcorders crank the AGC way up, amplifying the pumps to the point of sounding like some giant industrial processor. If your pump is even half as loud as that video makes it seem - you will go insane. It's aslo interesting to see how colored your tap water is.

I fill a white pail up and the bottom looks green, but your tank can end up being clear.

Thanks for the vid.

Brief update -

Although the freshwater testing went great, I ahve drained the giant once again. I relaized although I installed unions on each CL line I neglected to insall any type of ball valve. Hence, if for any reason I needed to service/remove the SWD device I would have a major problem.

As much as I am chomping at the bit to aquascape and begin stocking the tank, I figured it is in my best interest to address this oversight now.

Cheers

Man.. That would've been a nightmare.

Good thing you caught it.

Hope you can use all that water for laundry or something. I'm now using all my reject RO water for doing our laundry. It beats just assuming the lawn needs it.

Fantastic effort all the way Rudy.
Just finished reading the whole thread.
Top man, hope all your dreams for this monster come true mate, looks awesome so far.

If i had one that big my boys would buy a dingy.....

Rudy - this is quite impressive. I just existed the reef hooby (lost everything in Gustav) and am setting my 90g tank up as a planted brackish until I move into a house in a few years.

To answer your question about the waterfall, you really want it as minimal as possible. Reason is to minimize noise and salt spray. I aim for a 1/4" inch.

Chris

By they way, I am a big believer in true union ball valves. Quite expensive but it pays off when you can close some valves and remove sections of pipe.
