Was thinkin' of puttin' some snails in my tanks but the folks at the local aquaria store said don't 'cuz of the plants (swords, java ferns, crinums, crypt, anacharis, hornwort, myrio, wisteria, micro swords, sagittaria and vallisneria) that I've been buyin' of late. Didn't have a lot of choices so I basically just bought whatever they had 'cuz I've been tryin' to set up too many tanks all at once.

Got most of my lighting issues worked out (tanks run about medium light w/ some low lite spots) and water is cooperating for now at 7-7.2 ph. What's the scoop on the snails and plants? I couldn't imagine anything bein' worse than the Koi. Also any recommendation for a 32" deep F/W tank that needs some tall background. The Vallis is movin' pretty slow.

The species that I keep/sell are not plant eaters. They will eat decaying plant matter but leave healthy plants alone. There are lots of folks that don't realize that there are hundreds of species of apple snails and that not ALL are plant eaters. Pomacea bridgesii ("mystery" snails) are planted tank safe.

Though they won't hurt your plants, the pH is borderline. They need a high pH in order to prevent erosion of their established shell. they also require a calcium rich diet in order to encourage healthy shell growth.

As for background plants, you could try something like Rotala, it grows really fast and is a low/mid light stem plant. Or something like a hygro (willow hygro takes over and grows VERY fast as well).

Pardon my stupid but I'm not sure what the willow looks like, nor the Rotala for that matter, if ya got any pics available.

The tanks I'm workin' with are all pretty newly established and ph was a big part of my cycling battle. Over that now but I'm a little skittish about messin' w/ the ph now that I'm neutral. Any suggestions that are idiot safe? I don't want to jack the ph for the escargot and dis the fish.

Also how do I provide the snails with a calcium rich diet...got milk?

What I'd like to do is add a bunch of snails to help the plecos keep up, finish planting my tanks and use one of the 10 or 15's for a scrimpery.

What's a good number of snails per gallon or tank? If and when the scrimps breed can I toss any of the more mature ones in with the gold fish, koi or plecos (their almost all 5"+) without it being a slaughter?

Thanks in advance for your consideration of my many, many, questions...oops one more. Shipping from Pa. (what part I'm from Pittsburgh orig.) to B'more...couple of days still?

Thanks again - jamie :confused::)

A stable pH is what is important for fish, not a particular range.

Frozen green veggies are good (I use french cut green beans the most) there are also a ton of recipes in teh invert forum stickied if you are interested.

Pomacea bridgesii need about 2.5g per adult snail. Nerites are not as much as they have less bioload. Bridgesii are not efficient algae eaters and need supplemental diet. All snails will require a relatively high pH for shell health (ideally over 7).

Nope, typically arrives the next day :)

Hope that helps!

Just started setting up my 10g shrimp tank, so I'll be in touch shortly. :)

Regarding christmas shipping, I wouldn't be too concerned. I work for the post office and this is the first year we haven't hired xmas help. Mail volume is way down due to the economy and each day we seem to be waiting for "the big load" that never comes.

Edit : And I'm located in NW Ohio, for a general idea of where my mail volume report is coming from.
