Shells for shell dwellers?

None yet. :) I am getting 15G long (24x12 footprint) tank ready for them.

I am looking into one of:

- Multies
- Occelatus Gold
- Brevis

I need to go to the stores again and study them in detail again. If you were doing this, which would you choose? :)

Well, it is really a personal preferance. I have the occelatus (not gold). They are fiesty fish, but that is why I love cichlids so much. I had the bigger guys for a long time, and I deceided to go smaller.

The limit with the occies is that you need a lot of space for them. I have 5 in a 30. They are very agressive. But I love that (oops.. repeated myself).

If you are looking for a larger population, I suggest going with the multies or the brevis. I know multies breed large communities quickly. And to be honest, I am not familiar with the brevis.

Hope this was helpful ;) Good luck!

The more shells the better! You techincally don't even need a substrate, just pile all the shells on the bottom. Although, I would rather use sand for aesthetic reasons...

I think multis or brevis would be more suitable.

Play sand is cool for now. :) I used them in my previous mbuna tank before and it was nice and easy to maintain... Eventually, I'd like to try 3M's black stuff (I forgot the name at the moment)...

So Ocellatus really is that aggressive eh? I would have expected 24x12 tank to be able to hold any shell dwellers....

This may be true for the multis and/or brevis. However, I know the occies need the sand. Essentially they bury their shells in the sand. Unlike the multies who will use the shells where ever they are placed.

I will be getting sand. What's the point of getting shell dwellers and miss all the fun in seeing them dig & decorate the tank by themselves? :)

It is pretty cool watching them dig. I picked tahitian moon sand because it is black and I love the effect.

I can watch these guys for hours just burying and playing in the sand. Sometimes, I will play the 'hand of god' and move the shells; just to see them do it all over again ;) evil I know.. but I make sure no one is parenting before I do it.

Be sure to get plenty of sand. You will be surprised how much they go through.
