it's a cichlid of some sort, i know but what kind? someone gave it to me so it's kindof a rescue. i put it in a 30g by itself right now. if i can keep it in there i'm going to go rock hunting tomorrow as most of the snow has melted now. i need to do some research but first i need to know what i'm researching.

thanks. i've done some looking with the name you gave me and i am now thinking it is a hybrid of some different peacocks. Please feel free to correct me if you know better. it is hard to see in the pic but he has a purple head with a lot of blue irridescance(sp) and his body has purple and orangy-pind stripes. his belly is yellow and his tail is a mix of orange, pink and yellow. he is very freindly, and comes right over to me when i am near him.
 
Looks kinda like a Ahli to me, which is a Hap. I could be wrong of course but that was the first thing to come to my mind.

he does look a lot like that one too. to be honest, both species look the same to me. what is the difference?
basically, i'm trying to figure out if this fish will be okay in the 30 by itself for life, or if i should rehome it and how big it's gonna be.
 
after searching through a million pics i think he is this species

Aulonocara stuartgranti (Zunga)

there are so many species that are very similar and it's hard to tell. he is more yellow today. is it normal for his colours to change a bit? it seems everytime i look at him he looks different which is making it hard to identify him.

It's pretty normal for them to change color I think. As I understand it, his color would be even brighter in the presence of females. I won't even attempt to ID what species of aulonocara you have (I suck at it, lol), but congrats on the rescue. :)

As for a long term home, I think that a larger tank would be better if possible, but if kept singly, a 30 gallon should be doable.
 
He looks like he is definately from teh Aulonacara family... wierd but I was actually thinking he could very well be a mixed bread of some sort. He is a peacock Iknow that much, if he is a juvenile then it may be hard to identify him. He has the identical body shape of the venutus, same head!
 
could be an Auloncara stuartgranti? checkit out and see what you think?
 
this is an Auloncara stuartgranti. Yours may be a female or just timid? Or depending on size, may not even be its real color???? this is the closest thing that I could come up with. Hope it helps!
