RCS vs. Amano

Ok so the signs seem to point to get Amano Shrimp, but how large do they get, and are they similar to the "algae eating shrimp" who apparently can hop about 4 inches out of the water, and crawl around like a cockroach?

BoCoMo, sadly I don't have a method of diffusion for my CO2, I was thinking of putting something together, but for the time being I just try and keep it as low in the tank as possible, as to maximize the use of it.

co2 diffusion would be next on my list of to-do's. JMO :)

Do you have an air stone going? (not good for co2)

What kind of filter do you have on the tank?

I have an Aquaclear 70 HOB filter, yeah I was thinking of diffusion but any DIY methods?

BTW, if you're looking at shrimp as a solution to algae growth, it wont work. If you're considering to get Amano shrimp to eat hair algae, they may eat some. The only crusteaceans that I've seen really consume large amounts of hair algae are crayfish and Macrobrachium shrimp. There are snails that will also do the job. But Amano shrimp will try to find other foods, that they prefer over the hair algae, before eating it. It's kind of like when you go on a long camping trimp. You leave the least apatizing dry/MRE's until last.

Good luck!

Sometimes mine gets out of the tank when I'm doing a major cleaning. He rarely jumps. Usually he hitches a ride in a nook on the driftwood. If you keep an eye out for them when you're pulling stuff out you'll be fine.

By the way, these guys live for a long time. Mine just turned 8 this year. Be ready for a commitment.

I've never seen Amanos go for hair or any other filamentous algae. If that kind of algae is around there's usually plenty of tastier stuff that's easier to eat.

How long do you keep your lights on? From the description of your tank and your problem it sounds like you're keeping them on too long.

HOB's can be bad for co2 too. (disturbing the water surface allows co2 to escape) Other common co2 killers are powerhead or filter outlets too close to the water surface and of course airstones.

Your diffusion methods basically are (in order of preference): In-line reactor/Counter-flow reactor (can be DIY or purchased), Filter or powerhead intake, bubble ladder, glass diffuser, airstone and then bell. (last two being fairly inefficient)

Hope this helps! :)

Right now I have lowered my light use from 8 hours to about 7 hours split in the middle of the day, I do 3.5 hours on in the morning, a 2 hour break, then back on for another 3.5 hours.

BoCoMo, do you know of anywhere I would be able to find plans or a design on an In-line reactor/Counter-flow reactor, if this could help it may be very useful and I'd appreciate it :)

Do yourself a favor and get both types of shrimp. It probably won't finish your hair algae problem, but you'll enjoy the shrimp!

What are recommended tank conditions for these types of shrimp?
*edit* and what would you recommend, should I have them share a tank?
