Amsterdam airport opens the world's first hotel - for goldfish...

We'll file this one under "wacky PR news" - Amsterdam airport just opened the world's first hotel specifically designed for goldfish.

The hotel is operated by "D-Travel", a major player in the Dutch travel booking market, and passengers who booked their trip through them can use the facility for free.

Upon arrival at Schiphol airport, passengers can hand over their fish at the goldfish check-in desk (seriously!) and each fish will be placed in its own little fish tank.

Having arrived home after a 2 week vacation to discover that my aquarium had gone through a catastrophic meltdown, I have to say that the idea sounds cool, though I'm not entirely sure I'd feel comfortable loading fish into a bag to transport to the airport.

Imagine arriving at the airport, only to discover that the goldfish hotel is closed, or overbooked! You'd be stuck at the airport with a flight departing in 2 hours and a bag full of fish on your luggage cart. Obviously a bad way to start your vacation.

That is so cool! Although, I wonder how much stress the poor fish would go through:( I think it would be better off staying at home under the watch of friends/family every day or so.
Still, that is so cool!

hummmm....

I wonder what they will come up with next! I wonder what the filters look like on those tanks.... gold fish would get lonely would it not? unless you own more than one goldfish...

I'm just picturing some of our AC gurus turning up at the airport, with all their fish and critters from all their tanks in hundreds of plastic bags...

1) I think the stress of loading them up in bags- transporting them etc would be worse than a week without water change/food.

2) If you're away more than a week- I think buying one of those monthly auto-feeders would be cheaper than paying for someone to look after your fish.

I'd never get to use the service though... I have 3 kids- I can't even remember the last time I stayed anywhere for more than a couple of nights... can't afford to stay anywhere longer than that! :(

Now, that's interesting.

Goldfish hotel to open at Amsterdam airport

Expatica Netherlands - Netherlands

Dutch goldfish can now stay in a special fish hotel while their owners are on holiday.

Schiphol – The latest hotel to open at Schiphol airport won't be any comfort to stranded passengers and businessman with canceled stopovers.

The new facility to open on Wednesday is built specifically for goldfish.

Travel agency D-reizen will now provide free fish-sitting service for holidaymakers who have booked their trip through the company. Goldfish owners can check their pets into the hotel before boarding their flight.

The hotel aquarium will be housed in the airport arrivals hall, and visiting goldfish will be placed in separate areas within the tank to assure that owners receive the same goldfish they dropped off before going on holiday. The aquarium will also house 80 permanent goldfish guests.

“The tank is set up as a hotel. The fish can make use of facilities including a swimming pool and a tennis court,” said a travel agent spokesperson.

D-reizen said it doesn’t know how many guests are likely to take advantage of the free service, but it can always extend the hotel to meet demand.

The goldfish hotel will be opened officially on Wednesday by Olympic long-distance swimming champion Maarten van der Weijden.

They share the same water though? Holy mass spread of parasites and bacteria bat-man.

I wonder if fish find it harder to play against left handers too. No, wait...
