I just got some mollies and they gave birth yesterday:dance:. I've been reading about them and i've read that they are brackish and that they can even be made completely salt water fish:confused:! They were freshwater fish when I baught them and I am keeping them in freshwater right now. Is this alright? Also where did they originate to make them like this? Thanks for your help!

they can live in fresh and brackis and salt, but if you have fresh right now, youre going to want to aclimate them to salt. you dont nesisarily HAVE to but itd be better.

I've never heard about the completely salt part. Is that true? I know fresh and brackish, but being able to live in all three conditions seems unreal.

If your mollies are fine in FW, stay where they are. No need to acclimate them to BW and SW. Provided the hardness level is high, then the mollies will be fine as they are intolerant only towards soft water. Some species of mollies such as the Poecilia velifera do better in brackish but yours should be fine in FW.

I had a couple of mollies that were intended as food for my lionfish (Pterois volitans) but they have survived in there for at least two years until I quitted SW.

that's awesome! I guess you learn something new everyday lol

I was told that most tank bred mollies (from distributors) are raised in fresh water and wouldn't require salt in your home aquarium. I don't even have any aquarium salt in my tank due to live plants, and a couple of beautiful black mollies are thriving in there.

Most mollies especially ones often sold in shops don't require salt. If you hope to replicate brackish to marine conditions, use marine salt, not aquarium salt.

I agree with Lupin. They do not require any salt in the water. They do however need hardwater....and they will thrive.
