OK, with the exception of my DIY stack canister filter Iv never owned a brand name stacked canister and thought I would try a cheap used name brand one on ebay so I targeted and won a big on the Fluval 404. Only to realize too late (dummy) that it was discontinued probubly for leak and performance problems. Can anyone confirm or deny that the Fluval 404 model has a problem where, a fix, or has worked reliably for you for how long? I just want to prepare myself before it arrives to minimize any grief and a possible solution. Supposedly used once and been in storage for 2 years paid $68 with shipping, too much?

The only leaks I've ever experienced is when putting the filter back together after cleaning. Just make sure the o-ring never dries (keep it submerged in water at all times) and really press down on the cover/motor enclosure when putting it back together, until it's flush with the canister.

Don't forget to install the o-ring.

I have a 405 and haven't had any problems I didn't cause.

I believe they changed things (from 404 to 405) to improve component reliability. I've heard that the impellar shaft on the 404 tends to break, so you might want to keep an extra on hand.

I have a 305 and a 204 and I like both of them. The best thing about them is that you can buy a replacement for every single part including the case! And I have found mine very reliable. I wish they had a little bit more output but I don't have any experience with any other canister and I am pretty happy with them.

www.petmountain.com has parts and amazing fast shipping!

you mean on that whole "lid" for the thing? where the hoses attach? Where the motor is? I must be mistaken... that would be poopy!

Yes, an amazing thing about fluvals is that parts are EASY to find. I've never had a part break, but If I did, there are three different LFS that I could get it from. You could literally build a filter with the spare parts that are available.

Maybe that's what I've heard of breaking.. i know it was something with the impellar...
