Micro-dermestarium (Warning: Photos of dead fish getting eaten)

Finished the second loach. This is good, cause I'm pretty sure the cat ate the first one. :headshake2: So I put this one in my case right away. They did a better job on the head of this one, the last one had more damage.

Nice!

I took the limbs of the gecko out of the beetles earlier than the body, as they have less flesh and the beetles love to steal toes. They did get a couple toes off one foot anyway, but I can't complain overall.

Legs and tools soaking in alcohol, which sterilizes and kills any hidden larvae.

Every thing is out now except the very end of the tail. The tail is in pieces, but I don't have a hand lens to try to piece them together right now. I posed him while he was still damp with alcohol.

Side view. You can see the tail vertebrae in the back.

What's next? Well, often I do a soak in Dawn/water to degrease, but this also loosens ligaments and I don't want this guy to fall apart. So, I will skip that phase, as I doubt he is particularly greasy anyway, and do a hydrogen peroxide dip after he drys out. This will remove some of the dirt and debris, as well as whiten the bones. I won't leave him in long though, as it can also decalcify.

These "beetles" I found some old dog poo in the backyard just now and I picked it up, and like 40 black beetles spewed out of the poo. Are these the same beetles?

Wow... I have to admit this is pretty cool! I looked at the first thread and I've already learned a lot from just watching you do it! LOL We recently showed our campers (I'm the nature CIT at my camp) Animal Planet's The most extreme (architects), and the burying beetles where like number 6 or something... once I got past the gross factor I thought it was pretty cool! Obviously the beetles are different, since yours didn't cover the animal with spit, bury it, and raise the larvae inside. LOL...

Hard to tell. There are about 350,000 species of beetles. Those may have been some kind of dung beetle. Did you see any larvae? Those are the real giveaway.

Yeah, insects are amazing! I'll admit, bugs gross me out sometimes too, but the more you work with and around them, the more you just get used to it.

Wow, I saw this on Dirt Jobs a while ago.
People really do this???? For Fun???
I learn something new every day...

cool stuff.

This is pretty cool. I find it very fascinating ive seen it done on a tv program but not for real. Did you every get around to do any more fish besides the gourami you have shown on your earlier thread???
