What makes the Magnum filters good?

Though, it can be used as a stand-alone filter on tanks under 50g, the HOT Magnum is just a great supplemental filter that has the qualities of both a canister and a HOB filter. It has water polishing capabilities and is easy to move from tank to tank if needed. It is reliable and usually pretty silent (especially when compared to other HOB filters).
Of course it doesn't have the filtering/ bio capabilties of a large canister. No one here is saying it does. That's like saying your Honda accord blows because it doesn't have the hauling capabilities of your Chevy Silverado.

Anyways, I frigg'n blinked and this thread exploded. But yes, I have learned a few things from this thread. I think this sums up the the Magnum's place in the filter world best though.

I might eventually 'upgrade' to a Rena XP2 Filstar and keep the Magnum as a backup. I wonder if it would it be possible to use the Magnum as full time water polisher or would that put too much stress on the motor? That is what I love about this hobby, endless potential to fufil my need to tweak. :

You could run 2 bio-wheels and bio-whatevers in the chamber. And use it on one of them 4ft - 90g tanks.

And yes, I have run 2 wheels on a 250.
It was just a temp set-up on a 20g while doing the major change over on the 55g.
But it got my attention.
The 2-wheels were on the 55. So I moved them to the 20 with some of the fish, and ran it with the 250. And no it all didn't fit down one side.
the 250 was on the side and the wheels on the front.

Ooops and yes you could run the Micron full time.

Buy 1 extra, and change it out once a week.

If you ever want to trade your Mag 350 for a used Fluval 404, PLEASE let me know as I have 1 and another on the way. We can make sure they are both in good working order and exchange tracking numbers and send them off, seriously.

I also have one of those old walmart hot magnums sold under the regent name that another poster has. exactly the same as the hot magnum except the filter body is a light see thru blue color. i wonder how old that is? i bought it off ebay last year for 11.00 no one else bid on it i guess they thought it wasnt any good but it was new and works fine. walmart and marineland have had a long relationship i wonder when walmart will start selling marineland canisters under the regent brand name.........maybe i need to email that suggestion to walmart headquarters im sure they would sell alot of them.

No..that would be an even trade in my book, what I want is another 350 for my Koi tank. But the offer stands for any veteran of AC in good standing who wants to unload in good working order that old ball and chain for a nice cleaned up fully functioning Fluval 404.
In other words I'm willing to stick my Fluval where your Magnum is LOL. :rofl:
