I just picked up one clown loach for my 90. Its planted and loaded with tetras and rainbowfish. Will 1 clown loach be a bad idea? I really dont want many of them, but didnt realize they should be kept in groups.

I can tell you it absolutely will be lonely and you won't see normal behavior out of it, it will exhibit a depressed sort of behavior and hide a lot. I know sometimes people can't really get a group of them, but please get him at least 1 friend.

Honestly, the best thing you could do is return him. Size will also be an issue in the long run with a 90G. But other than that they really should have company, like pink said, even 1 friend if not 4.

I am going to have a hard time catching him now. I will leave him in there for now and maybe pick 1 more up in a few days. There expensive little buggers!

I started out with 5, lost 3 of them, believe to IP.
For a long time, I thought ok, the two are nice and healthy, I will not take a chance and add anymore.
One morning, I saw the two in a long heated battle. Only some scratches, but it made me reconsider adding another.
Now, I have three and they get along great, always hanging out together. They are much more enjoyable to watch in groups.

I would also say 3 because with only 2, the "new guy" will get picked on, 3 spreads out any aggression.

You could go with a group of smaller loaches, easier on the plants & you could have 5-6. Striatas, histionicas or kubotai are all wonderful too & won't outgrow the tank.

I'm babysitting my brother's clown loach. He also didn't realize his tank wasn't big enough for one and he only got one. Anyway I have a tank full of Tiger Barbs, it's kinda cute now that I have the clown loach, he thinks he's a tiger barb, he schools with them. I feel bad for him not having any of his own, but I also don't want to get any more because of the size issue, I have a 50g community tank.

Thats true deadmongoose, Till I added the third clown loach, one of mine was always swimming with the tiger barbs.
