so i have a question. what kind of fish are blue gill? i have always thought they were a type of cichlid. i need to know because my little bro caught one and has it in a tiny tank, and i want to take it to my house and put it in my 55 gallon.

They are a Centrachid or Sunfish. They are pretty closely related to cichlids (both are in the order Perciformes). A couple external characteristics to distinguish them: cichlids have 1 pair of nasal pores (nostrils), sunfish have 2. Cichlids have a split lateral line, sunfish have a continuous lateral line
okay, so how do you think a blue gill would fair with a jack dempsey in a 55 gallon. because i need to get the blue gil out of my brother tank, he has a two maybe three gallon tank and the blue gill is 5 to 8 inchs according to my dad.
Remembering when a friend kept some sunfish many years ago there is a good chance the blue gill would put Mr. Dempsey on the canvas. Good luck.
my dempsey are picky, i have a mating pair who just had fry that i pulled out and put in their own tank a few days ago. they like my melanochromis (johanni and aruatus) but hate my oscar whom i have tryed to put back in the tank on sevral different occasions. so they may take to the blue gill or treat him like the oscar.
I dunno if you would consider their relationship "close"...a good chunk of all bony fish are in the same order.

Anyways, I would not mix them...especially in a relatively smaller tank like a 55.
I agree with the above. The JD are tropical fish and the Bluegill is cold water.
If its in the 8 inch range, fry it up and eat it.
