Would pacu eat firemouth cichlid?!

Still, at only 2 feet wide a 240 is not going to allow room for a 3 foot fish to turn around. That's my concern.

It's certainly a better life than most live but as hobbyists shouldn't we give it a chance to live the best life possible, even if it means giving up the fish? It's completely up to the OP but in my honest opinion a captive pacu should be kept either in a larger tank or public aquariums.

Folks, we have a lot here to think. Give the OP time to decide. Finances should be considered. Not everyone can afford a larger tank than a 240g. If not him, who else wants to accommodate a pacu willingly with a larger tank even?

Jon, they may be schooling fish in the wild but let's face reality with domesticated lifestyle, they can do just fine alone. It's just a sense of emotional upheaval coming up when you tell someone they are lonely because they are not kept in groups.

Again, the bottomline is can everyone afford a much larger tank for pacus? With hundreds of pacus sold, where do the pacus go?

also, consider the fact that even a pacu that is only 2 feet long can ram through the sides of a 240 without thinking twice.

As I said, a public aquarium is an option...a less desirable but totally available alternative would be euthanasia.

edit: that being said, the OP never specifically stated having a pacu in his or her possession. If not, I apologize for jumping to conclusions.

It's entirely possible but it's up to the fish. I have a few other fish that cohab with my pacu just fine but i put another fish in the tank that was about 6" - 7" and they eat it almost instantly. By the time I got the net back into the tank it had no head or tail. The pacu went at it from both sides and that was that.

I think we are being conclusive here already. Give steelshade time to weigh in his options on the future of his fish. This is his fish, not ours.

yeh your tank is big better than what it would usually get, though I just thankfully was able to get rid of the 2 I had rehomed from a 35g and a 55g. I had them in my 300g and though they are suppose to be mostly vegetarian, they began to destroy their tank mates. My beautiful adult male green terror half eaten, A quirky full grown jack dempsy half eaten, a 14 inch oscar and this past weekend I came in to find 7 of my other fish with bites, still alive but definitely attacked.

I do not know why they suddenly turned all norman bates but that would be the day I was gonna let a common 4 dollar fish wipe out my 3 zilli tilapia, my wild caught oscar or my 3 zebra tilapia. So, it was either a kill the pacu's or rehome them thankfully someone stepped up and I was able to rehome them. \

This all being said don't be surprised if the firemouth gets whacked. And don't listen to people that tell you it will stop at 24 inches cause that is not true.

Personally I think a pacu is not a fish that should be in home aquaria as it takes such massive water to keep one happy and healthy. My two seemed to suddenly have gotten a hate on for everyone else in their tank. I watched from where they could not see me at the tank activity and for sure even though multiple feeding stations are used they would rush from place to place where the food was just to scare off all the other fish and not even try to eat the food.

My two pacu were approx 1 1/2 year 23 inch and 1 year 17 inch, and I really am totally convinced that they just took exception to sharing the tank with other fish. I will never ever touch a pacu again unless I have my monster tanks and ponds in place. I have a 430g that is coming, but to me to common a fish to dedicate so much water to when better things can be done with the space.

I'm curious what people think should be done when someone already has one of these fish but simply cannot get a tank larger than 200-250G. My friend is in this situation. She bought a 47G tank that came with a pacu, a couple tinfoil barbs and some other random fish. She was able to rehome all but the pacu. she's been borrowing my 55 for him for a few months now as we try to find her a good deal on a 200G tank for him. he doubled in size within a couple months, obviously he was being stunted. So no stores want him, no one locally wants him, the aquariums don't want him, are you thinking rather than try and get a 200 which is the largest tank she can physically fit in her house, she should turn him loose in the puget sound or kill him?

opnions are great. Now who should I ship this pacu to and when do you want it?

sorry to sound harsh but put an add out for free fish for rehome and in the event that no one takes it, put it to sleep.

after all it is a fish that should not be for retail sale to general public.

worse though is the thought of release VERY VERY VERY BAD IDEA
