My new tank set up (pics)!

as far as the surface, a small powerhead will be more than fine, why aren't you running the sump on the freshwater, if it was this same tank?

My sump was a 10g with two home made baffles, filter floss, and a protein skimmer. I relied on my 70lbs of live rock and live sand for most of my filtration. For this tank I don't think just filter floss would be sufficient (the protein skimmer would of course be useless). I think the Rena is more appropriate for the tank now.

i use wet/dry filters on all my freshwater tanks i like them alot and i like how the overflow box keeps the water skimmed.

I'm starting to wish I had bought a wet/dry. I really do miss the constant surface skimming. In fact, right now there is a lot of algae stuff floating on the surface. The airstone is helping, but I'm definitely going to have to get a powerhead to help move the water around up there.

A small sponge filter would help TONS...

...I use the AClear powerhead w/quickfilter attachment. It quickly polishes the water column pulling out those extra particles that you see free-floating.

Gorgeous tank, just be patient and it will stabilize. Leave those lights off unless you have plants and just worry about your water parameters... Gonna look sweet.

first off the tank looks sweet, of course there has to be a but... lol i'd lose the plastic and get live plants. replace the actinics with 6700k bulbs for the plants and maybe run 1 10k bulb if you like it brighter.

I think the Rena is more appropriate for the tank now.

The XP3 should be all you need.

Just run the output of the xp3 so that it disturbs the water surface. I have a spray bar just under the surface, and it is angled up a tiny bit so there is agitation on the top. Then you will have no problems!

The lights are staying off until I have some stuff to see in there. Bushwhacker, I thought about live plants (and I made sure to buy substrate that would be appropriate for plants if I want to add them later), but for now the idea of live plants seems a little daunting. When setting up the tank I asked my LFS about plants and how to take care of them and it seems like if I don't run a CO2 system (which can be expensive) I would have to dose on a daily basis. I think plants are definitely in my future though. Bigwave, I'm using the spray bar as well and it does keep the surface right around the bar pretty agitated, but maybe because the tank is so long it only stirs up half the surface. I was really expecting a lot more output flow from such a large filter. I'm wondering if I have it set up right?

If you do a low light planted tank you would not have to dose anything.

Have fun, do as little at a time as you like...;)

look around, see what other people have accomplished, and find Xactly what you want, or more importantly DON"T want..
