this is the biggest tank I've owned. I had a 50 once, but most have been 30s and 20s. I used to use Aquaclear or emperor power filters that hang on the back of the tank. The were relatively inexpensive and easy to take care of, thus the appeal. how should i do this tank though? I'm planning on having a cichlid setup.

What kind of cichlids?

I like to have a canister and an hob. I use an AC110 and an xp2 on my 75's, might be overkill but i like the redundancy.

definitely one canister at least!

as said above, depends on the cichlids, my sa/ca tanks all have fluval fx5s except for one. or you could do two ac110s for messy fish.

the guy gave me a canister filter with no media (Hydor rennaisance prime 20....220gph) I've never heard of that brand before. I'm probably going to go back to lake malawian cichlids.

the hydors aren't bad but normally don't hold a lot of media if my memory is working right now, lol, you could probably get away with it and add an aqua clear 110 HOB filter, atleast that's what i would do.

yeah, these things seem way more complicated than aquaclears! I'm guessing one AC110 wont be enough even though it cycles like 500gph. The canister just seem like it would be a headache even though it seems good for biological filtration.
