I Have been HotWired!! PIC HEavy!! Hotwire Cutter

I hear ya. Been unemployed myself since the end of December.

It never fails, when I have the time to build my Doomsday device, I never seem to have the money, and when I have the money I can never find the time..

interesting ingenuity there zigman.

A new an improved version? Yes.
I was looking into building one of these last year. I would have only gotten to use it maybe twice, so I couldn't justify it. After seeing how easy you made it look, I just may try it.
I would have used it to cut foam for RC planes. I instead went through a box of razor blades.

Here's the new one..

this one is considerably smaller, in fact it fits in a USPS priority shiping box.. coincidence? I doubt it.

Anyway this little guy has the same electrical components as the beast did, still has a 60 watt transformer, still cuts like a champ! This smaller model has no tension adjustment, so it doesnt cut as fast as the bug one on thick material, but it still slices right through it.

It will cut through about 6" of foam with no problems.

it has a nifty little single clamp cutting fencs to make cutting shipping foam easy. or you can take it off and free hand your cuts.

Its made from 1/2 inch plywood scrap, and some old polycarbonate scrap but all of the hardware, and electrical components are brand new.

Well it wasn't easy to cut some foam with one hand, and hold the camera with the other hand, but i managed to get it done!

Sorry for the shakeyness!
