How do you keep the cat off the tank?!

My stupid 14lb cat keeps jumping onto my 33g tank! I have a full plastic hood on it and a fluorescent strip that is slightly too big for the glass window in the hood. When he jumps up there, the light moves a bit, so I can tell when he's been up there either at night or when I'm at work. He is actually stupid, but I love him because he's my cat. I saw him jump up from the couch (where I was sitting) and up onto the tank. I yelled at him to 'get down!' and he stared at me for several seconds, then freaked out and jumped down.:rant2:

I've already tried moving furniture, but he can get up there by jumping straight from the floor. The top of the tank is about 5ft from the floor.

Stupid cat drives me nuts. Drives our other cat nuts as well. Anyway, there's my rant. Ideas would be appreciated. Except for the ones where you tell me to get rid of the cat.

Awww.....that's cute but I understand your frustrations. Is that really your cat?! Wow, he has a blue and a green eye?! :) Do you think he's jumping ontop of the tank to look at the fish? I know when I had a cat, he loved to look at things that moved (birds, fish, cars, etc). Have you tried giving him a sofa or chair that is positioned right infront of the tank so that he has a front row seat to the show? Maybe he'll settle to look at the fish from the comfort of his own personal chair/sofa instead of jumping up to see them from face down. ;)

I leave the hood open on the 6ft tank and lower 2ft tanks.
oscars and convicts are quite defencive, and nip at the cat when it has a drink or tries to paw the fish.
havnt seen her try for a drink in a while.

Start laying several strips of scotch tape sticky side up across the top of your fish tank. He won't like it and will be corrected when your not there to reinforce the fact he should never jump up there.

The thing with cats (vs. dogs) is they don't care if you don't want them to do something. They just care if you're there to discipline them for it... Like they learn not to do it while you're looking vs. not to do it period.

We have two cats. An 8 pound long haired calico and a huge 20+ pound Maine Coon. Thankfully, ony the little cat ever gets on the tanks!

You might try putting tinfoil on the tank. I've heard they hate that...

I admit, I gave up on mine (see avatar, that's the old tank, current one is a regular bowfront with light strip like yours). He often sits next to the tank and attacks the fishes, which is ok. I think the reason he sleeps up there is the warmth from the lights.

We tried tin foil and tape a water guns to keep him off the couter too, but he's just too dumb, and they don't bother him. He's managed to get halfway into the tank once when I was feeding. The only thing I think is if you could put something on top of the tank so he wouldn't have a flat spot to land?

hose...that'd be a little excessive, but in the long run..
