I have a 60 gallon tank with a mix of different Lake Malawi cichlids (10 of them). They are all very young and small for now. One of my friends has a bunch of baby convicts, that are now "teenage" size. I am wondering if I can mix the convicts in my tank with my fish?

i would not unless you want jail house action

the convicts will prolly start a turf war when they start to reproduce and trust me convicts reproduce with ease

actually it is more about their proclivity they get real defensive when they are making little convicts, and since they are prodigious they would definitely take over a 60g, I would be hesitant to put them in with younger fish.

though you may end up with a couple of mellow laid back ones really if you wish to put them in best to watch them see how the tank responds to the new fish. I do have a couple in with my severum, earth eater, botia tank but that is a 180 and the convicts cause no guff

What type of African cichlids do you have? Some have special dietary needs that may differ from convicts. It's generally not recommended to mix CA/SA cichlids with African CIhlids. They have different water requirements and different behaviors. Mbuna (the most commonly found African cichlids) are downright mean and may harrass a convict to death. When convicts breed they can take over an entire tank.

You can do it just keep it with a mix of maybe 1 male and 2 to 3 females thats how my african tank is with alot of different africans and convicts and believe it or not they get along just fine so try it. You may even surprise yourself.

Didn't you JUST ask about trying this mix? As in less than a week ago? I would give it more time before deciding if they will get along or not. Once Mbuna mature they get nasty.

Thanks everyone. I have decided that it is not worth trying. I have all Mbuna cichlids. I will stick to those, I don't want to chance getting the tank out of harmony!
