So for the past few months, I've used compact fluorescents in incandescent light hoods. They give high wattage, are cheap, and use low energy, and so far they're great for growing plants (I have two on a 10g growing anubias petite). Just curious if anyone else has tried this and what the general preference for lighting is on AC ;)

I am using 2.5 wpg of the 6500K screw in fluorescents combined with one t-5 in a purple-ish bulb color on my 75 and my plants are doing great.

Ditto to what you're doing DP, just on a larger tank. Very pleased with results.

I love MH lighting, the shimmering effect is beautiful. But not for a planted tank. I use T5HO's on my planted tanks, with the exception of a 10g I have a CF spiral, and a 20g long I have T5NO's. All but one of my T5HO's are suspended from the ceiling so I can raise the lighting high enough to control (or try to control) algae blooms.

I run compact fluorescents and T5HO's. T5HO's are brighter definitely.

My 54watt T5HO is brighter than my 130watt CF
