My 5th Betta!
I dont get it!
All the fish in the 55 gallon tank are doing fabulous! no problems whatsoever..
all the fish in the 10 gallon tank, are doing great (3 guppies, and 1 aquatic dwarf frog), except the betta!
As some of you may remember, this is my 5th betta, and ALL 5 of them have gotten fungus.
Granted, the first 4 were either in betta tanks, or in a newly set up 10 gallon tank... but this guy I bought after I learned the hard way about cycled tanks and water changes, and how betta DO NOT like those little **** betta tanks!! So this guy (who I called 5 because he is my fifth, and I didnt want to give him a 'real name' until I saw he was gonna make it passed 1 week - unlike the others) I bought AFTER my tank was cycled, and have done the proper water changes and such... but 3 mornings ago, I discovered that while fluffy stuff on his chin. So I immediately started treating him with fungus medicine. At first, on day one, he would just houver at the top of the tank... now, day 3 (as of yesterday) some of the fluff has fallen off, and he is swimming around.. but then seems to get tired and goes back to the top corner of the tank. Im continuing the medicine, and hoping for the best.
But after 5 failed betta attempts, Im ready to give up on the **** things! They are my favorite tropical fish, but for some reason I cant keep them alive!! Does anyone have any advice??

Sincerely,
Betta killer 5.0 :(

-I should add.. there is driftwood in this tank, which oozes, and makes the water appear orangeish in color, most of which isnt noticable until I do water changes.... could that be hurting the lil guy??
the other fish and frog seem to love it.. they even peck away at it....

Has your driftwood been boiled and cleaned well? Why don't you try with just aquarium rock and plants? You could also try getting a bigger tank for him 5-10g... big tanks are a lot easier to keep stable

I think he said the bettas were in a 10 gal tank...correct me if I am wrg

The betta is in the 10 gallon tank, and the drift wood has been in that tank for over a month. It was pre-soaked drift wood that I got at an aquarium store... so Im completely stumped! I dont know why the bettas keep dying?? its so strange!

it looks like you got unlucky. ususally the only time my fish get fungus is from after a prexisting condition. For example the fish gets nipped or injured leaved an opening for fungus to come in and attack. Fugus infections are hard to treat and you have close to a 50% chance of survival. It looks like you are getting bad fish i would try another pet store.

you've checked your water peramiters right? a month is still a short time to cycle a tank. Most of mine take 6 weeks if i don't already have pre existing media.

I did have pre-existing media. The tank was completely cycled before anything went in it...
Im so sad! I dont wanna be a betta killer! they are so beautiful! I have never had such bad luck with them before. I had one that lasted forever when I was a teenager. I dont know if I can handle killing another one. Poor 5.
I was even going to change his name to 5-alive if he made it.... :shakehead: but i dont know if he will...

Keep up with the medication. I wonder if it's possible the tank remained infected with fungus from previous bad fish.

But after those fungus fish (bettas), I did a 95% water change, after the tank was cycled, and let it rest before adding in the new fish.
Omega, why do I keep losing my bettas???
5, as far as I know, isnt dead (im at work right now).. and he seemed alot more lively last night after 3 days of medicine (no other betta lived passed day 1 on meds).. so I dunno.. maybe he will make it... but if not, sadly, I have to forget about any future bettas. I cant handle hurting anymore. They are too precious

UPDATE:
I just checked in at home... 5 is still alive, but fuzzy.... Court doesnt think he is going to make it. Should I put him out of his misery? :( Ughhhhhhhhhhh

If the fungus is worsening, yes, you might need to euthanize him. I'm sorry to have to say that.

As for why they keep getting fungus, did you get all your bettas from the same store? If so, it could be bad stock and/or bad care. If you try again, definitely find a new source. You might want to look for a local hobbyist breeder, or contact the ACers who have been breeding bettas recently.
