I hope this works right. I am new to this site and posted for the first time yesterday, as I stated before we lost all our fish and I now know I had my 10 gallon overstocked is probably the cause. Now we have only these 2 snails left. Couldn't seem to get a good picture of the lighter colored one. What kind are they? They seem to still be very active despite loosing everything else..

Pomacea Diffusa

also commonly referred to as a Brigg, look's like you have a pretty gold with a very healthy looking shell :) They need some calcium in their diet to keep their shells strong so feeding them some blanched zucchini or some canned green beans will help with calcium intake, you could even add some cuttlebone. Hope that helps!

Thank you! Also I am thinking of setting my old tank up again. It is 36in long 16in high and 12in wide, this is a 30 gallon am I correct? What types of fish would be good for this size and how many? Also will it take longer for this size to cycle than a small 10 gallon? I know I am full of questions but I would rather ask 1000 questions than to put the fish or the children through another loss like before. What filter would you recommend as the one for the 10 gallon will not be good enough.. I love the site and all the friendly advice. Thank you all so much.

Others may disagree, but I think the best thing would be for you to go (preferably with your kids!) to the library and get some books on aquariums. They provide a step by step "how to" that a question and answer exchange cannot fulfill.

I hope you will research in this way! Books have been kind of forgotten about, but it shouldn't be so. There are websites we can recommend to you also, for example http://freshaquarium.about.com - but I think a book would be great for you and your family. Just take it nice and slow and if you have any questions, ask them ahead of doing anything like buying fish or making an equipment purchase. It's a lot harder to help when people ask "I got 3 goldfish, they're in a 10 gallon tank is that ok?" instead of "Can I put 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank?" And once someone has already bought a filter, it's hard to say "That's a piece of junk!" but if someone asks for their opinion in comparing a few different kinds...you get what I mean? ;)

To answer your question, it is a 30 gallon tank...and it will take longer to cycle. You should read up on "fishless cycling" (Google it if you haven't heard of it). Instead of making fish be the ammonia source, flake food, a piece of shrimp or pure ammonia will do it.

Go to your local pet store, look at the fish there are for sale. Avoid cichlids or goldfish, but otherwise write down the names of what strikes your fancy and come back here! :) Livebearers are great for children, guppies and platies can fit just right in this tank. Balloon belly mollies could too, but they are often not very healthy because of their inherent problems that come with their deformed (on purpose) shape. Avoid swordtails for a 30 gallon.

Questions are great, and of course they will always arise....but the best way to learn is to read, read, read all you can!

At least these days you can get online and ask the questions. When I first got started with fish, no such thing as computers, let alone internet , ect. lol. I basicly learned the hard way, by trial and error. Still things I don't know, but it's a lot easier now to get started. I was looking at aquabid, and they have lots of great books up for auction there. That would be a good place to get a good book for a good price.
