steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

I would do this as well. +1 Ace...
You need a "recap" post of what you have done from start until now.. 25 pages is a long read.

Have you tried back to back near 100% water changes? I would try that on a 30G.. get a 50gal bag of salt and do 2 25G water changes 24 hours apart, each time putting a powerhead against the rocks to blow out as much as possible to get it into the water column right before the water change. If it is a bacteria bloom due to excess, then blowing out the rocks then siphoning out 25G and replacing should reduce the amount quite a bit, do it 2x in a row and I would think it could be down to manageable levels.

One way to tell if it is a bacteria bloom, does it leave a white sticky film residue on the glass? Not talking about the algae film which is more like a dust, bacteria is sticky when it blooms in a tank.

In lieu of LR?

Everything would be a welcome addition except I don't know anything about gammarus shrimp except a quick google search indicates they are freshwater shrimp?

Its the microfauna I think that will help you balance things out and I don;t think you get that anywhere else except LR and LS.

A diverse CUC is also pretty important so barring the gammarus shrimp go for it assuming the price is ok.

yes greech, was meaning instead of liverock. may call TBS and premium and just see what it would take to ship a few pounds but price i think would be silly.

figuring if i got some spaghetti worms, bristle worms, amphipods, brittle stars, etc that it would be ok.

well, day 2 and tank has been all clear all day (i hate saying that as i know i am gonna jinx it).

tuesday i am going to do another 10 gallon change.

back to wondering now if it was that thermometer that was broke and just needed time to clean out, who knows....

Glad to hear it!

It would absolutely be a good idea to add the critters you mentioned and if the tank is staying clear no worries about getting LR. Really hope the clearness sticks!

ok bud. what are your thoughts on bristle worms? i hear they can get huge which is my only concern.

i really hope the clearness sticks too man.

told the wife before i die that dang tank will be clear :-)

Bristle worms are fine. They would need to be a couple feet long to take out a fish, etc. I have several and probably more that i can't see. They are great cleaners capable of getting deep inside rocks.

thanks again bud.

there has been a red spotted blenny on dd for over a week now. hoping the little guy sneaks through for a couple more as hope qt can be ready by then.

course having said this i will wake up to a cloudy tank tomorrow :-)

well, spoke with inland aquatics today and they were very pleasent to deal with and spoke a long time without rushing.

i ended up getting a kit plus a couple added different varieties of worms and snails on top of that.

they did have some live sand from their 15 year old reefs but it was the real fine fine sand and held off just as i know the way the sand i have in there still moves around a bit.

tank has been 95% clear during the day and 100% at night for nearly a week now, so i hope i am about done with whatever i had going on.

did a 10 gallon water change today as i filled my qt tank up with the old 10 gallons.

going to run some carbon through it to clear it and then put my filter media in it and start the dr tim stuff with ammonia.

i am gonna give that 2 weeks to cycle and add a fish then to the qt.

i figure my main tank will still be fish free for another 6-8 weeks and that should allow all my new critters to get a head start on populating.

Happy to read the good news steeler. Sounds like you are on your way now!
