I'm currently cycling my 60 gallon tank, the setup is as follows:

60 Gallon tank
2 Marineland 200B Penguin Filters
1 Top Fin 300w heater

My question is I plan have a cichlid tank and I want to get my fish from Bluegrass Aquatics and according to their site they recommend 20 to 30 fish. That seems a lot to me and I want to make sure i don't overcrowd the tank. Now I know you are supposed to overcrowd a little bit in cichlid tanks, but is that over doing it?

I have no problems doing PWC every week, so that's not a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Here is my tank:

Depends on the species and type of cichlid you're talking about, but I wouldn't do more than 20 mbuna (definitely not when they're adult size) in that size tank. If you're talking peacocks or tanganyikans, I'd go with even fewer. I wouldn't recommend haps for that size tank.

Agreed, and I'd add that if it is mbuna, you will need to add more rock piles.

I concur. Tank looks really nice but like DrgRcr already said if you go with Mbunas they needs lots of rocks.

Overstocking is not a cichlid thing it is a Mbuna thing, for aggression, just so you know.

Got it, thanks for the replys. I plan on adding more rocks, I'm just picky and my local rock store doesn't get many dark ones. I'm also going to start with like 6 or 7 Mbunas, then add on, I don't want to freak out the bacteria by adding 15 or so fish at once.

Still cycling.....seems like these nitrItes will never go away :angryfire:

Thanks again!

How are you cycling the tank? If you are doing a fishless cycle it would be best to add them all at once so they have equal footing for territories and since they were raised together they tend to be more forgiving of each others presence. What's your future stock list?

That what I wanted to do, but I'm getting conflicting advice on adding all the fish at once. I plan on getting a package deal on the link in my original post, or Live Fish Direct. I"m doing a fishless cycle, on week 5, just waiting for the NitrItes to go away, the tank can eliminate 4ppm of ammonia in 24 hours as of now.

Conflicting advice is a standard of fish keeping. :) What are the negatives you've heard about adding them all at once?

What are you stocking in this tank?
