Impending Power Outage

I've had up to four days without power and no loss of fish. I have internal filters and gravel filters on my various tanks. I think a canister filter might not do to well - it might get stagnant and foul... I didn't do anything to help aerate the water, but my fish didn't show any signs of distress. I also didn't feed them at all during the outage. I only had adult fish, no babies.

I would think your goldies should be ok. Maybe scoop and pour some water to help aerate it. I would rinse canister filters before restarting them, if you have that kind of filter. It would be best to go into the power outage with clean water, but you can't always plan that. I really think they will be ok.

Thanks everybody.... Feeling a little less stressed....

Not to worried about heat luckily...... goldies.... gotta love em

A round of water changes before the storm never hurts either.

we're having to evacuate and i can't take the fish or the turtle with me....... i'm not worried about loss of power for them (the fish tank is self-stabilized and neither the turtle nor i care if his water gets stinky)..... my huge concern is if we lose windows or skylights... i have no idea how to protect them from the damages that may be inflicted then. the fish tank is upstairs in the bedroom next to a huge window, and the turtle tank is downstairs next to a window and under a skylight. there's no lumber left anywhere to board up, and we couldn't get to a second story window or the skylights anyway. anyone have any suggestions? or are they just SOL?

Take a roll of masking tape or duct tape and male a large double "*" (sort of like DUNDUNN avatar)across the window going from corner to corner, top to bottom and side to side. this will help to prevent flying glass should it break. It works very well when you have no plywood to cover windows with. Masking tape is ideal but when all else fails use duct tape. Do the same thing on tanks that face windows. It won't stop it from breaking but will stop exploding glass. If possible, cover with a blanket.

All this? Yet another reason I live in Phoenix. No tornadoes, no hurricanes, no earthquakes (occasional tremors from California's earthquakes, but I've only noticed a handful in decades), no black ice, no driving in snow, don't have to ever shovel sunshine.

I have lived in Tuscon most of my life. I have seen tornadoes in AZ, dust storms that blasted the skin off your face and took the paint off a car and cause a 100-car pile up on the highway, enough snow to make driving dangerous even though it was a mere dusting, frost in the early winter mornings to make your car slide. . . . .

There are drawbacks to living anywhere, some just have more than others.

If I were in your situation, I'd probably secure the tanks to the wall first with wire. Then I'd find some kind of padding to wrap around the tanks (styrofoam sheets, thick bubblewrap, maybe even a comforter).

Anybody have suggestions on what to do with my biowheels in case of power outage? I was thinking of placing them in jars filled with tank water, but I'm not sure how effective that'd be.

Sure, the heat can get melt your face off hot a few days each year, but that's what central air is for. Good luck with your preparations. I hope everything comes out okay for you guys.
