People at petsmart.

Its hard when it comes to people. Many people take a friendly info bit like that as a mean thing but if they really cared about there fish then i would think they would be happy to get the info. Hopefully what you said will hit them on the way home lol. So do you know anything about apple snails? I have a ten gallon with snails in it and at the moment i have baby snails in it. But yesterday i was cleaning and rearanging the tank and i found a group of baby snails that were not even the same type of snails i have. it was crazy. I get all my greenery from my grandma's tank and she doesnt have snails. Anyway any idea how that could happen? crazy....

regular employees should probably do what their manager tells them to, assuming they want to stay employed.

i work a petsmart and it is true some people there dont know what they are doing but many do learn alot and give some good advice. HOWEVER, there are soo many people who come in insisting they know what they are doing and buy everything on our $1 sales and come back the next day with like 10 out of the 15 fish they bought DEAD after we told them it wasnt recommeded at all. some people are just stubborn. we also do save many new people from making huge mistakes, many think they can come and buy fish the same day they buy the fish tank but we convince them to wait and let their tank cycle before they add fish. other people are like WTF?.. i came to get a fish tank and fish today and im going to do it or my kid will be pissed.

im glad to tell you all though that recently petsmart has listened to its employees AND customers, That the PACU is no longer being sold at petsmart. the ones you may see at the store are the last ones and no new shipments with them will be received.

Also i recommend working at petsmart OVER petco for a few reasons that are solely MY OPINION.
petsmart is highly customer oreinted where as when i enter my nearby petcos no one greets me nor even looks at me.
petco has around only 60% of the fish petsmart carries.
petco has higher prices lol

only advantage i see to petco is; saltwater fish and the ability to special order a FEW fish(even though petsmart already regularly carries these fish)

I agree with all of the above. I get the same feeling from my Petco (cold shoulder) not to mention their tanks regularly have ich around here.

I am really glad pacus aren't being sold any longer :) Come to think of it, I haven't seen them lately.

Now if they could only get rid of the African brown knives...lol

I agree with the fact that some of the people that come into Petsmart/Petco are just stubborn. I remember a time when I overheard a conversation between a customer and an employee. The customer was complaining that his nitrites were really high and also how his fish were also acting weird in his 7 gallon hex tank. After hearing him, my first impression was that he at least new something about fish care because he went and checked his water params. Then I heard his stock, I promise you that this is really what he said. He said he had 3 giant danios, a kissing gourami, a pictus catfish, and some "sucker fish" in his tank. I should also mention that he was holding a bag with a couple of assorted african cichlids! After I heard that, I just decided to walk away to stop myself from saying anything. Some people!

i am of the belief that people will only hear what they want to hear and fighting this is useless, as said before, the only thing you can hope for some people is they either get out of the hobby as a result of disaster or they change their ways and listen to more advice from it. at the same time the way i came into the hobby was with a betta in a vase, i then stumbled across this forum and learned proper care and now i have 4 tanks not even a year later. it was mainly from my quest for knowledge and willingness to change. the best thing you can say to someone is to tell them about this forum and hope they learn on their own. its no use getting frustrated over. and also i have to say i love petsmart, ive even made quite a few friends through going there. i have even helped educate some of the employees there and they are grateful. honestly people can change but it is usually self driven.

IMHO, people want the pretty fishy and don't care what others think. But also IMHO, it can't hurt to try.

I am a employee in a LFS and we focus on just fish. I want to educate everyone way to much but people don't want to listen. So my rule is I tell them twice and then I let them decide to waste their money.
I had an example just the other day.
Guy comes in looking for a 6" Oscar. We did not have anything except juveniles. So I could not help myself.
Me: you know O's are quick growers, what do you want a larger o for?
Guy: I have two others and want a third
Me: how big?
Guy: does a figure measurement of 14"
Me: you know a 6" wouldn't last?
Guy: ah no he would be fine just don't want to go smaller
Me: what size tank?
Guy: umm 55gallon 48x12x16
Me: you know two o's your over stocked? Do you have anything else in there?
Guy: two o's, jd, and two or three plecos
Me: how often do you do w/c?
Guy: once a month
Me(shocked now): what kinda filtration? And you know one o is min 75 gallon tank?
Guy: nah man it's a tetra something filter and when I get my own place I want to build a bigger tank into a wall (gave the same dimensions as a 55) but I would have to figure out a way to do a w/c in the wall. I want to get a larger o now so they don't get to aggressive.
Me: wow sir! Your over stocked, your w/c is lacking, you will kill the fish and we do not have o's that size for you. I am sorry and good luck.
There was a few things missing from the dialog but this I the same type of person who teases the piranha thinking the bite isn't that bad or won't happen.

That's a lot sorry but funny and I was nice.

i think it all depends on who is working. First you have the employees that don't give a crap, that are stupid, that look forward to their breaks, that goof off while working. And then you have the more dedicated employees that work hard, deny fish sales to people that don't have the right tank size, that really care about the fish, and ask questions to the customer before catching the fish for them. I have encountered both at the same Petsmart I usually go to.

I hate to sound "mean", but if you are in a customer position and another customer is doing something, you can do what you did and if that doesn't work simply mind your own business.

It bothers me that people think it is their responsibility to "fix" other people.
