so i started off with two mystery snails... they had some babies, so had like 6 snails (this was about 3 months ago). the 2 adults died a month or two ago, but then i kept noticing new babies all the time. i think the babies are having babies? at what age do snails normally start reproducing?? i did get one new plant since the death of the big adult snails, so some snails might have come from there, but i'm kinda freaked out. all the baby snails i keep seeing are different sizes so they have to be from someone reproducing continuously in my tank. i counted about 50 snails until i gave up. i can't keep them! they are taking over, but i don't want to kill them and i don't know anyone who wants 50-100 snails! what do i do???? :22_yikes:

also what do snail eggs look like? because i have found a clear sack on the outside of my baby cory net in my tank. i have 2 glass catfish, 2 emerald green cories, 2 albino cories, 4 neon tetras and a million snails. i know they aren't cory eggs (since i know what those look like, as i have had about 50 hatch a week ago :)) i took a pic, but you can't see it well so it's not helpful so i'm not posting it. the best i can describe this eggsack is clear and jello textured looking with maybe 10-20 little dots in it, but the dots are separate from eachother. any info would help!!! thanks :)

Mystery snails lay their eggs above the water line- they kind of look like a wad of bubbly chewing gum, and are kind of hard & crispy. Next to impossible to miss during tank maintenance. They definitely don't lay eggs in the water, and their eggs aren't clear and jelly like. My guess is you had some hitchhiking pond snails with some of your plants. Remove the clear sack to a paper towel, freeze it over night, and then throw it away. You can try to catch some of the snail babies by putting slices of cucumber or zucchini in your tank, waiting for them to swarm it, and then take the slices out, and knock the babies into some other kind of container- then just put an ad up here on AC, and list them as free for local pick up. You can also list them on your local Craigslist.

Sounds like pest snails came in on your plants. All it takes is one and they will multiply very quickly. They lay eggs under the water line and they're in a clear sack. I would take them off your hands if you end up fishing them out. My puffer would love the meal. :)

Just what they said. Mystery snails eggs look like thisuploadfromtaptalk1339469340420.jpg
and are never below water.

thank you everyone for all the info! i think you have solved the mystery. :) and next time i am thoroughly rinsing off my next new plants as to prevent the snail apocolypse. kriskitty23- do you live in or near everett, wa? i will give them to you!!!

Get some clown loaches, they will be gone in no time.

Its generally a bad idea to add livestock to take care of a problem.
