I have about 60 fry currently at different stages of growth. Mostly from livebearers. I'm wondering when I can start selling them. Fish like mollies arrive at the lfs almost full grown but it seems to take so long!

Jist wanted some tips as I would like to post on here before selling to my lfs. For multiple reasons not least of which is I want to be active in the forum classifieds and the monetary factor of selling to a business or selling privately.

I have mollies from a month old to two months old and guppies that are newborn as of yesterday along with some other fish.

Any info greatly appreciated!

When large enough to identify the type of fish (not when large enough to sex). Don't hold your breath on making more than wholesale cost.

Yeah I'm not looking to screw anyone for sure. I'll have to make sure I'm priced accordingly. Hmm interesting statement. That would put my mollies ready to sell at about a month and a half old (maybe older, I just feel like I can for sure identify at that age but that is probably because I already know what they are XD ). Not sure about the guppies yet as I haven't seen their growth speed (first brood birthed last night) and still not even sure if people on here are interested in fish like that since they're fairly common.

It's really up to you. If you're alright with a wholesale to an LFS like E said, definitely go ahead with that. If you are willing to wait and have the resources, you could also sell them in a few months when they are larger and distinguishable in terms of gender.

Honestly, even having 60+ fry currently I haven't even finished my first bag of Hikari first bites (almost there though) and that is with feeding everything 3 times a day. Granted I only had 20 fish, then 35, and now 60 as of last night but it hasn't been too bad in the monetary department after getting a couple 10g grow out tanks. I don't mind keeping them around, they're very interactive. The mollies love to pick at our hands when doing tank maintenance and sometimes we will just play with them and they'll swim through our fingers and peck at us a bit. I figure they'll end up being better pets even because of the regular interaction from us as opposed to being in a bunch of tanks at a business that they hardly see people through. I don't know that factually though.

Lol the current problem is space. I want to see my fish if I'm going to have them but with wanting to breed multiple types and needing room for all that I'm due for a 29 tall for angel fry and if I get that I'm going to have to move all the grow outs to a side room that is hardly frequented. It actually makes me feel bad. I don't know if I should but I do =/

Probably the easiest way to know would be to ask the LFS itself. Not all have the same policies when it comes to purchasing fish from hobbyists and may not even want them, since they are common livebearers.

Oh yeah I've already spoken to them. They are definitely interested. I'm not sure if it is just to save on shipping or they think they can get the fish for pennies on the dollar. They originally told me a couple months but the mollies that are around 2 months still seem pretty small compared to what they normally get in stock so I thought I would check on here.

It's a win-win too because I think my girlfriend and I's favorite part of this whole experience is raising fry. It's a wonderful experience. I can't wait to experience it with fish like angels that seem to have more personality than your average Molly or guppy and thus would make me form a deeper attachment.

There are old be two reasons for that. The first is that the breeders in the far east may use growth hormones to accelerate growth. The second is that the LFS may have been lied to about the ages or may just not know. Personally, I know that fry I have had became distinguishable at around three months with enough grow-out space, food, and water changes.

I do agree with pappy...go to your LFS and work out a deal. Find a price that will make raising the fry fiscally feasible for you and the LFS. IME, live bearers in general will go for at least $2, so it's really up to you what you want to ask for.

Yeah the mollies are $2.50-4.00 so I wanted $1.50 for them, the glowies go for $7 there and I wanted at least half that, and I can't remember guppy price but I think they're like $2 a piece and I have a feeling they will want to give me $0.50 but I'd prefer half on those too.

Of course I will talk to them much more about it but with them avoiding shipping and me living only a mile away I figure asking for half isn't too bad unless they're selling them for over 3x what they paid. I'm honestly not sure what a LFS normally pays for large amounts of fish
