What goes with RCS?

I keep my RCS with plecos.

I would think Endlers or some of the small rasboras would probably be your best bet. Even they would likely get some shrimplets. You might want to have one "safe tank" as you breeding tank and then thin the adults out into a tank where there shrimplets might get eaten. If you leave your best adults in the breeding tank, you should increase the quality of your strain.

I currently keep my RCS with BN plecos without any trouble. I have successfully kept them with most non-aggressive community fish with the exception of guppies. I have been able to observe my guppies going after them and have caused a reduction in their proliferation. Microrasboras were fine with them and never had a problem. same with neon tetras. Having java moss has always helped create hiding places for the fry.

I feel that "Verbal" has given you great advice.
 
My ricefish (Oryzias wowrae) play very nice with my RCS, and I've actually seen them recommended to be paired with RCS. My clown killis are completely peaceful with the scrimps too but they are still juveniles so I will keep an eye on them. My Apisto is in general a little monster :) but so far that has been just fine too with the adults, however I'd never suggest that apistos in general would be good tank mates and I am SURE that she will eat all the baby scrimps she can find.
 
Ok, maybe platies are out! I'll stick with small fish with small mouths. I'm fine with some loss of shrimplets. I started with 6 RCS and now probably have 100+ counting the little guys.

The idea of keeping a small tank with the best colored RCS as breeders is a really good one. Right now there's no culling going on and in a community tank, it would make sense that the most colorful shrimp might get eaten sooner. I was not intending to add a tank... LOL! So much for that!

Maybe we will go check out the LFS that isn't quite so local. They have a good selection of less common fish.

I took my girls to the LFS and we picked out some fish. My oldest daughter chose harlequin rasboras, my middle girl chose cardinal tetras, and my youngest chose lamp eye rasboras. I'm not familiar with the lamp eye rasboras. They are little silver surface fish with bright blue eyes and a black spot on the dorsal fin. We got 6 of each. So far no one is actively hunting shrimp, so I am happy. I can handle some losses, there are plenty of shrimp there. I fell in love with some beautiful koi angels (great quality fish!) and nearly bought a couple. But I've had angels before and have seen them hunting baby platies. I never did have a platy survive them. So I knew that the shrimp wouldn't fair any better.

I may try a couple snails... I am a little leery of snails though. I bought a little orange snail with my shrimp. One snail. It died within a couple weeks and I didn't think much more of it. Then I noticed a bunch of little orange snails... There were lots of snails. When I moved the shrimp to the 55g, I moved the snails to the rainbow/tiger barb/clown loach 125g. Last I saw, there were about 2 left. I hope none got into the 55 gal. They reproduced a bit too fast for me. Are there snails that aren't so prolific?
