New to this forum but I’ve been keeping fish for years now. I’ve got a 90 gallon tank setup right now holding a red tail catfish (yes I know way too small of a tank, looking to sell or donate somewhere) but I want to get a tiger Oscar and possibly something else with it. Any suggestions?

I think depending on the size you get your Oscar , that tank will probably be ok for 12-18 months although after it hits 12”, you’re going to have really do big water changes. After 12-18 months you’re going to want to upgrade. If space is an issue, I think you could get by with a 4’ 120. The extra width will make significant difference.

Assuming this 90gal is a 48" x 18" tank, it's not the best footprint for an O and another fish.

I do it in a 75gal, and have had my O and green sev together (just these 2) for 8yrs. Basically no decor. Just substrate, a couple fake plants. I can keep my nitrates not to exceed 20ppm with one weekly fin-level water change. It's still not advisable.

A 90 is more than adequate for an Oscar....the chances of it exceeding 12" is pretty rare actually. Definitely lose the RT cat....

I think a 90 is adequate as far as room, but considering how messy Oscars are, I don’t think it’s enough volume unless he’s doing 50% WC multiple times a week

The volume is more that adequate....if you don’t over feed there wouldn’t be any need for multiple wc’s with proper filtration.

Filters do nothing for nitrates which is why there’s the need for the massive WCs. I wouldn’t have an issue keeping an Oscar in a 90, but I also don’t mind a lot of maintenance. All good tho, we can agree to disagree
