Well, I just got a crowntail betta for my 3 gallon tank.

The betta looks pretty good, except around the face there is a lot of white... Its not anything bacterial or anything, but will the red color spread out to the face or is that just the natural coloring?

Also, what is this I hear about direct sunlight and bettas? Is that just to prevent temp. swings?

Basically, just see if the guy looks alright and make sure I haven't messed anything up.

He looks good! The white is probably natural coloring. A good diet will intensify the coloration and maybe make the white less visible.

One thing I notice in the tank...the filter intake screen is large. You may want to cover it with a sponge so the betta doesn't get his whole tail sucked up and become stuck.

Another question: There is black in between the scales in the area behind the gils... is that bad?

probably inside of gill flaps, all bettas have it from what i've seen

direct sunlight not only makes water warmer but promotes growth of algae which is something you won't want.

i don't see a heater, so i suggest getting a small one (marineland stealth visitherm 25w is a good choice) to keep the water warm and constant, the way bettas like.

Yeah, he's fine.
Here's an older pic of mine, his fins are much longer now, this isn't long after I got him. As you can see white is normal on the red bettas.

Assence of pigmentation or "black scales" are common. Nothing to worry about.
