bio spira

Its a quick way to cycle tanks.

Properly cared for Bio-Spira is great.

I started a 10G community tank and fell into the typical newbie trap. Fully loaded it day one. After a couple of das the water quality was horrible, even with daily 50% water changes. All I had was ammonia test strips at the time.

I finally found a LFS that stocked bio-spira, and dumped a load in. Two days later everything was cool.

Now I always use it to quick cycle a tank or anytime the bio filter gets disrupted.

how do you know if its dead?

thats the problem, you don't know till its too late. Mine came from a LFS that has good reviews. The bio-spira was kept cold and I transported home in a cooler. The problem is that even though the store and I took good care of it, you have no idea what it went through on its way to the store.

So basically you dump it in, load your fish and wait. if it turns out to be bad, your screwed becuase your tank is now stocked. This is what happened to me. I am still getting the levels under control.

The refrigeration issue is a problem between the distributer and the retailer as well. My LFS gave up selling the product because of the unreliability of receiving viable shipments. I experimented with the product about a year ago, and it worked as promised. But I have also had good luck using a product called Stability by Seachem, and it does not need refrigeration. A hand full of gravel or some filter material from an established, healthy tank is still the best way to go in my opinion.

It can, help, but the shipping reliability will always be a possible conflict.

Love the old standby that never fails....media transfer. And an occassional fishless cycle.
