Goldfish for science projects. >-(

I think its pretty irresponsible to be posting names and phone numbers of elementary schools for folks to call and complain, especially when you haven't spoken to anyone there and really don't have any facts at all.:mad2:

When you're done phoning the school, maybe you can call PetSmart and Petco to complain about the bettas in cups that you "rescue" all the time...for full price...lining the pockets of the people you complain about. Then don't stop there...start calling all the bait shops in your area that sell minnows or other live critters...you know people who buy them hook the thru the eyes, lip, or body and then use them to catch other fish.

In for a penny; in for a pound....
I do have the facts, actually. Ask me a question about this school or this goldfish project, I went there for 7 years.

That is very rude and disrespectful to say. Bettas and bait shops have nothing at all to do with this. If you don't like this idea and if you don't have something nice to say, dont say it at all.

I dont get why you are so mad that I am trying to help fish. You should be happy I am doing this. After all, this is a fish forum, and you act like you don't like fish at all.

I think I am being rather mature about this, and you are being rather..actually..VERY imature about this. How old are you anyway?

I understand schools have better things to worry about other than the ASPCA and PETA, but they should be able to except other peoples opinions, and YOU SHOULD AS WELL!

I dont feel mad at all as I post this. Yay for me :D

So I suppose you agree with this whole goldfish for science projects thing?

Also..yes I do buy bettas from pet stores. Yes, I do think of it as rescuing. I love bettas, and whether you like it or not, I buy them from pet stores and I give them nice 2+ gallon homes rather than a tiny cup. And although you agree with it, and are "trying to stop the whole betta selling process in pet stores" it is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU DREAM ABOUT IT! I know you want to save all bettas from suffering in tiny cups at the pet stores, but that isnt going to happen anytime soon, and the ones there now are suffering, expect me/some others to let those 200+ die until 50000000000000000+ years later they stop selling them?? Imagine what a loss that would be. A gazzzlion bettas would die.

I might just be silly... but if you take 50-60 Comet Goldfish into a LFS and give them to them, where do you think they are going to end up? Yeah... in some big Cichlid's belly. I guess that is a better way to go than being flushed live down a toilet. Although, I guess being flushed live down the toilet gives them a chance to survive and get into the local waterways and spread whatever kind of sickness they got from being kept in a dirty cup to all the other native fish.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is a no win situation. Too bad you don't have a big pond!

Aghh too bad we are not in my old house! We had a GIIANT pond!

poor poor fish who end up eating them.

Wow...
interesting..lol

So I suppose you agree with this whole goldfish for science projects thing?

I don't know...you haven't given any information. How long are they going to be in the cup? a day, a week, a month? what are they observing? it all makes a difference.

at any rate, I've re-read some of your posts in the thread and it dawned on me that you're still in elementary school, or close in age anyway. The "mom" part of your screen name threw me off. I do think its noble that you want to save animals that you may perceive are being harmed, you just need to do it responsibly. IMO you have a tendancy to maybe "fudge" the facts a little to make your point. When urging people to take action, you really shouldn't.

Some examples might be:

*In one thread you accused one of the chains of putting blue food coloring in the betta cups as if you knew it to be fact. When other forum members pointed out that this was unlikely, you claimed to have overhead two employees talking about it...even claimed that the blue tint in the water dyed your fish. All of this is very unlikely, and when something is very unlikely and illogical usually its not true.

*In this thread you said that the school was going to flush the fish at the end of the project. I would suspect that not to be true...maybe it is, but you should have at least confirmed that with the principal before posting that the named elementary school was going to be flushing 60-70 live fish down the toilet. I know that you may think you have all the facts from your friend who attends the school....always best to be sure before making statements that might inflame tensions. Some folks here were even urging you to call PETA & ASPCA based upon this. Talk with your parents first before sicking these organizations on the school.

I know you don't think so now, but posting the name/number of an elementary school in a thread with the potential to incite action really wasn't a good idea. With all of the craziness in schools today, the last thing schools need is the potential for violence. While this violence may be unlikely, the potential still exists. I'm sure when you have your own kids you'll likely agree.

I applaud you for your conviction with regard to saving animals. Just remember though, when you look for folks to join your cause (like you did when you urged everyone to call the school), just make sure that you're giving all the facts.

Good luck with your new goldfish!:)
