There is this one spot near the front of the tank where twice today I have seen bubbles come up from under the gravel. I don't want to dig it up just yet, I thought I would get some opinions first. What could be causing this? Do you think maybe the MTS could be flatulent or something?

Do you gravel vac in that spot often? If not it could be deadly gases building up from the decomposition of dead material. Is this very fine gravel like sand? It could be compaction if it is sand. Or maybe when you fill your tank back up with water some of it gets trapped under the gravel? Do you smell anything coming from the tank when the bubbles come up? If it is what I think it is it should smell somewhat like sulfur. I believe the gas is hydrogen sulphide. These bubbles can be deadly to your fish if they are in the area when they come up from underneath the gravel.

Is this coming from where your java moss usually resides? Plants release CO2 gas into the water sometimes in quantities that produce bubbles.

Um, do you mean O2? Plants produce O2 in the day and CO2 at night, but the CO2 wouldn't be in such quantities to produce visible bubbles, as CO2 dissolves faster than O2. I've also never seen java moss pearl either, not that it isn't possible, but in a low light tank with no CO2, I'd severely doubt the possibility.

It's not pearling. These bubbles are coming from under the gravel. It's not an undergravel filter or airstone either. I'm not that stupid lol. These bubbles are not small either, they are about the size of a pea and they only come up every now and then.

have you tried cleaning that spot off?
check it out..

Start digging. Once you dig, you still may not find anything, and the phenomenon will probably not ever repeat itself.
